The fifth album from Welsh pop prodigies Super Furry Animals, Rings Around the World, is their most staggeringly ambitious work to date. Featuring everything from Status Quo-style boogie-rockers to technofied drill & bass meltdowns. Added to this they make rock & roll history by releasing an album and DVD simultaneously. The DVD holds twelve specially commissioned film shorts rendered in dizzying surround sound. This is an immaculately conceived pop masterpiece. --Louis Pattison

  • Super Furry Animals - Phantom PowerSuper Furry Animals - Phantom Power | DVD | (13/12/2004) from £8.97   |  Saving you £-0.98 (-12.30%)   |  RRP £7.99

The Super Furry Animals' Phantom Power is something of a revolution in music DVD, with remixes, production commentaries (from the producer) and lyrics all included for further enjoyment of their sixth album. Sound is pristine 5.1 surround, the graphics are both Gothic and reminiscent of cartoons from the 1970s, but disappointingly these only introduce the songs: the graphics which actually play along with the songs are more akin to a larva lamp. Another little niggle: the "Play All" option only offers a cartoon jukebox which remains static. Despite this, the SFA remain at the forefront of the DVD format--now if only a few more bands would take a leaf out of their book. --Nikki Disney
