Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker, the creative troika behind Airplane!, scored another hit with this big-screen adaptation of their short-lived television show Police Squad!. Deadpan as ever, Leslie Nielsen revives his TV role of Lt Frank Drebin, the idiot with a detective's badge. The jokes come thick and fast, gathering a momentum that lasts until the final act. Ricardo Montalban is a perfect foil as a villain whose aquarium is invaded by Drebin during routine questioning, and George Kennedy is delightful in a self-parodying part as an earnest but obtuse lawman. There's a hilarious bit when Drebin--wearing a live police wire while going to the bathroom--can be overheard over the loudspeakers at a speech given by a flustered mayor (Nancy Marchand). And yes, that's OJ Simpson as a detective who ends up on the wrong side of numerous Drebin blunders. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

It remains the most joltingly violent, psychosexual grindhouse shocker of the '80s, directed by a veteran of I Love Lucy and starring a frequently shirtless former teen idol with an epically demented performance by an Oscar® nominee. And now it can be experienced for the first time ever in UHD: Jimmy McNichol stars as an orphaned high-school student raised by his strangely overprotective aunt (Susan Tyrrell of FAT CITY fame) who becomes implicated in a grisly murder investigated by a psychotic police detective (an equally unhinged Bo Svenson of INGLORIOUS BASTARDS). 7x Emmy® nominee Julia Duffy (Newhart) and Bill Paxton (in one of his first film roles) co-star in this jaw-dropping hunk of genre insanity (Pop Culture Beast) and former DPP 39 Video Nasty - also known as NIGHT WARNING - now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative with 6 hours of new and archival Special Features.SPECIAL FEATURES: Audio Commentary With Star Jimmy McNicholAudio Commentary With Co-Writer/Producer Steve Breimer And Co-Writer Alan Jay Glueckman, Moderated By Mondo Digital's Nathaniel ThompsonAudio Commentary With Co-Producer And Unit Production Manager Eugene MazzolaExtreme Prejudice - Interview With Actor Bo SvensonPoint And Shoot - Interview With Director Of Photography Robbie GreenbergFamily Dynamics - Interview With Editor Ted NicolaouCast And Crew Interviews With Actors Jimmy McNichol, Susan Tyrrell And Steve Eastin, Make-Up Artist Allan A. Derivative fluff from 1987, The Secret of My Success is made tolerable by its bawdy exuberance and an appealing performance by Michael J Fox, who was still enjoying TV stardom and the career momentum he earned by travelling Back to the Future. Here he plays a Kansas farm boy who dreams of scoring big in New York City... but reality turns out to be brutal to his ambition. When his uncle (Richard Jordan) gives him a mail-room job in the high-rise headquarters of a major corporation, Fox occupies an empty office and poses as a young executive, winning the attention of a lovely young colleague (Helen Slater) and having an affair with his boss's wife (Margaret Whitton). Sporadically amusing as a yuppie comedy and rather off-putting as a wannabe sex farce, the film's still recommendable for its lively cast and a breezy style that almost succeeds in updating the conventions of vintage screwball comedy. Whitton is a standout performer here, so you may wonder why her comedic talent has been underrated, apart from a good role in the first two Major League movies. This may be little more than a big-screen sitcom, but it's not without its charms. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

  • Power Yoga [2001]Power Yoga | DVD | (17/09/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Susan Fulton's Power Yoga is launched amid much competition. With stars such as Madonna and Geri Halliwell forsaking the gym and turning to yoga, it's inevitable that everyone is jumping on the yoga bandwagon. Setting out to provide a basis for strength, body toning and emotional balance, Power Yoga, based on a more form of yoga known as Ashtanga, suggests that this is for people with a serious interest. But you could easily mistake this as a rather dull promo of a deserted Lanzarote beach. In terms of the yoga tuition itself, what this amounts to is the equivalent of a decent yoga class in a local community centre. All the postures are there but without the punch, oomph and glamour associated with power yoga. The whistling wind-type soundtrack is relaxing, but hardly conducive to the spirit of what is often described as aerobic yoga. Teacher Susan Fulton would have been ideal to present a beginners session for yogaphobes, but in this contrived scenario her unimposing manner becomes unimpressive. And cruel though it may be, with the amount of successful yoga training sessions on the market, Fulton just doesn't cut it. On the DVD: special features amount to three menus which turn out to be wordy descriptions of pilates, tai chi and yoga. The DVD highlights how cheaply and unimaginatively this has been filmed. --Lorna V

The Abominable Dr Phibes is an unusually beautiful horror classic in which Vincent Price stars as the titular genius who specialises in organ music, theology and concocting bizarre deaths for anyone who wrongs him. Discovering why is half the fun, so for now let's just say that Phibes is a little mad and very, very angry. Aided by his assistant, the lovely, silent Vulnavia, Phibes begins cutting a gory swathe through London's medical community, with the dogged Inspector Trout hot on his tail. The film contains many pleasures--exquisite art direction and a dark sense of humour among them--but the real treat is in watching an old pro such as Price at work. Whether he's playing his organ, staring down a victim or drinking through his neck, Price is at the top of his game. He mixes dark menace with wry comic touches, revealing both Phibes' maniacal obsession and offhanded confidence in his own genius. Settle in for an evening of elegant gore--and if an attractive, mute deliverywoman comes to the door, whatever you do, don't answer! --Ali Davis

Famously described by Ingmar Bergman as ""a work of genius"" Peter Watkins' multi-faceted masterwork is more than just a biopic of the iconic Norwegian Expressionist painter it is one of the best films ever made about the artistic process. Focusing initially on Munch's formative years in late 19th Century Kristiana (now Oslo) Watkins uses his trademark style to create a vivid picture of the emotional political and social upheavals that would have such an effect on his art. The young artist (Geir Westby) has an affair with ""Mrs Heiberg"" (Gro Fraas) a devastating experience that will haunt him for the rest of his life. His work is viciously attacked by critics and public alike and he is forced to leave his home country for Berlin where along with the notorious Swedish playwright August Strindberg he becomes part of the cultural storm that is to sweep Europe. There have been countless film biographies of famous artists but only a handful can be considered major works in their own right. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Watkins' original extended 211-minute TV version of what is regarded by many as an extraordinary feat of filmmaking.
