  There are some filmmaking teams that invariably bring out the best in each other, and that's definitely the case with director Carroll Ballard and cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. They previously collaborated on The Black Stallion and Never Cry Wolf, and Fly Away Home is their third family film that deserves to be called a classic. Inspired by Bill Lishman's autobiography, the movie tells the story of a 13-year-old girl (Anna Paquin) who goes to live with her estranged, eccentric father (Jeff Daniels) following the death of her mother. At first she's withdrawn and reclusive, but finds renewed happiness when she adopts an orphaned flock of baby geese and, later, teaches them to migrate using an ultralight. Sensitively directed and stunningly photographed, the movie has flying sequences that are nothing short of astonishing, and Daniels and Paquin (Oscar winner for The Piano) make a delightful father-daughter duo. --Jeff Shannon

  The first thing you need to know about Sleepers is that it's based on a novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra that was allegedly based on a true story. The movie repeats this bogus claim, which was attacked and determined by a wide majority to be misleading. Knowing this, Sleepers becomes problematic because it's too neat, too clean, too manipulative in terms of legal justice and dramatic impact to be truly convincing. And yet, with its stellar cast directed by Barry Levinson, it succeeds as gripping entertainment, and its tale of complex morality--despite a dubious emphasis on homophobic revenge--is sufficiently provocative. It's about four boys in New York's Hell's Kitchen district who are sent to reform school, where they must endure routine sexual assaults by the sadistic guards. Years after their release, the opportunity for revenge proves irresistible for two of the young men, who must then rely on the other pair of friends (Brad Pitt, Jason Patric), a loyal priest (Robert De Niro), and a shabby lawyer (Dustin Hoffman) to defend them in court. Despite the compelling ambiguities of the story, there's never any doubt about how we're supposed to feel, and the screenplay glosses over the story's most difficult moral dilemmas. At its best, Sleepers grabs your attention and pulls you into its intense story of friendship and the price of loyalty under extreme conditions. The movie's New York settings are vividly authentic, and Minnie Driver makes a strong impression as a long-time friend of the loyal group of guys. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to 7 years in jail Michael Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years and transformed into Charles Bronson Britain's most notorious prisoner.   Battlestar Galactica was one of the first off the starting blocks in the rush to repeat the Box Office business of Star Wars. The original pilot episode was adapted for both cinema and television viewing, and this DVD features the more self-contained theatrical release, which eliminates certain plot threads (such as John Colicos's treacherous character Baltar). Mixing Egyptian, Greek and made-up mythologies and designs, the premise was almost too sprawling for a two-hour presentation. In the series, we'd go on to learn why there were only a handful of humans left floating around, and what their relationship with the eagerly sought planet Earth was. Here it's all about set up, with Apollo (Richard Hatch) and Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) stealing the show as the fighter pilots with all the charm and the best lines. Lorne Greene adds a classy element to the large-scale acting ensemble, as does an uncredited Patrick Macnee as narrator and voice of the villainous Cylon Leader. Producer/writer Glen A Larson debuted Buck Rogers in the 25th Century at almost the same time (again for both TV and cinema), but something about this has always made it the most fondly remembered Star Wars wannabe. It's a shame that the soundtrack, and Stu Phillips's cracking music in particular, is only presented in mono, but a clean digital transfer at least means that Daggits, Centons and all the other felgercarb look its best. Extras on the DVD include cast and filmmakers' biographies, production notes and Web links. --Paul Tonks
