  • The Beatles : Anthology [1995]The Beatles : Anthology | DVD | (31/03/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £45.99

The Beatles Anthology was initially broadcast as a TV miniseries to run alongside the series of three Anthology double-CD albums. This set of eight documentaries has the heft and scope of one of Ken Burns' expansive projects. Still, you may find yourself with more material--particularly about the Beatles' early lives as lads in Liverpool--than you'll want to watch. The documentary material is copious, including early performance films and tapes, at the point before they found their true voices. The actual Beatlemania years--beginning in 1963 and concluding in 1970--feature extensive performance films, as well as home movies and archival material. The best parts, of course, are the interviews with the Beatles themselves, who produced the entire thing. Along with reworking two previously unreleased John Lennon tracks as "new Beatles songs", the Anthology includes some unseen Lennon interview tapes so that his acerbic voice can be heard as well. This stands as a comprehensive document of that heady period, the second coming of rock & roll, as the Beatles took what Elvis had started and expanded upon it exponentially. This box set gives a solid sense of the historical context and the way these four musicians changed the world around them in the 1960s. --Marshall Fine

Disc 2: The Beatles Videobiography 1965 - 1970 Here explored are The Beatles as never seen before. With extensive archive footage and interviews, the legacy of this behemoth of mainstream culture is carefully sifted to get to the truth behind the legend. The extensive expertise of a host of music critics, journalists and industry insiders is here pooled to form a concise whole, analysing the Beatles canon with the love only The Fab Four induce, with exclusive insights from Norman Hurricane Smith, sound engineer for the band from 1962-66.. Disc 3: Rock Milestones - The Beatles Meet The Beatles Featuring rare archive performances by the Beatles performing live in the USA; this is the most powerful independent review of the album which launched the Beatles in America. By 1963 the rest of the world was gripped by Beatlemania. Only America remained unconquered. Capitol records promised manager Brian Epstein that they would make 1964 the year of the Beatles. Capitol were as good as their word. On the back of the ground breaking Ed Sullivan live appearances and the number one US album Meet the Beatles, the Beatles took America by storm. In April 1964 the Beatles occupied all five top positions on the billboard singles chart, a feat which has never been equalled. Meet the Beatles was carefully selected to introduce the band to a whole new continent and remains today a powerful record of the band emerging as world-class songwriters.

This restored, animated valentine to the Beatles offers viewers the rare chance to see a work that's been substantially improved by its technical facelift, not just super-sized with extra footage. Recognising that its song-studded soundtrack alone makes Yellow Submarine a video annuity, United Artists has lavished a frame-by-frame refurbishment of the original feature, while replacing its original monaural audio tracks with a meticulously reconstructed stereo mix that actually refines legendary original album versions. What emerges is a vivid time capsule of the late 1960s and a minor milestone in animation. The music represents the quartet's zenith--Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The story line, cobbled together by producer Al Brodax and a committee of writers, is a broad, feather-light allegory set in idyllic Pepperland, where the gentle citizens are threatened by the nasty, music-hating Blue Meanies and their surreal arsenal of henchmen, with the Beatles enlisted to thwart the bad guys. Visually, designer Heinz Edelmann mixes the biomorphic squiggles, day-glo palette and Beardsley-esque portraits of Peter Max with rotoscoped still photographs and film; Edelmann's animated collages also nod to Andy Warhol and Magritte in properly psychedelic fashion, which works wonderfully with such terrific songs. High-orthodox Beatlemaniacs can still grouse that the animated Fab Four are (literally) flat archetypes, but that's missing the sheer bloom of the music or the giddy, campy fun of the visuals. Making sense of the story is second to submerging blissfully in the sights and sounds of this video treat. --Sam Sutherland

The Beatles appeared four times on CBS' The Ed Sullivan Show in the US, and this two-disc set presents all four shows in their entirety. While one is tempted to skip through this collection to watch only the Fab Four's 20 performances, there is historic value in seeing Sullivan's complete programmes. With America reeling from the murder of a popular president, JFK, less than three months prior, the Beatles' Sullivan debut on February 9, 1964, ushered a renewing joy into the country's living rooms. The band kept it up another two weeks, sharing Sullivan's variety-show bills with the likes of impressionist Frank Gorshin, comedians Allen & Rossi, future Monkee Davy Jones (in a scene from Oliver!) and sundry unrepentant vaudevillians, magicians and acrobats. Various problems with microphones and bad direction (one barely sees John Lennon during the first show) couldn't stop the magic, and by the time the band made a return trip in September 1965 to perform "Ticket to Ride", "Yesterday" and "Help" among others, the group's brilliance and wit outsized their television surroundings. --Tom Keogh

On August 15 1965 56 000 fans came to celebrate the Beatles at the opening show for their third US tour. The first open air concert ever played at New York's Shea Stadium was attended by the largest concert audience recorded up to that time. Photographer Bob Whitaker described the state of emergency in NYC during the arrival of the Fab Four as follows: The journey to Shea had to be organized like a military operation. We flew by helicopter from the top of the Pan-Am building in Manhattan and transferred to an armoured Wells Fargo truck near the stadium. It had no windows and the kids were hammering on the outside and rocking it. The noise was deafening the screaming and screeching was really terrifying. At one stage we thought the truck was going to tip over and we were all going to get dragged out and torn to pieces. Promoter Sid Bernstein remembers: I guess we didn't care too much about sound trouble. You couldn't hear much of what the Beatles were singing anyway because the kids were screaming their lungs out all the way. There was incredible screeching all over when emotions went haywire. It was all about taking part! This was a historic moment for the kids and for all of us who were involved with the show. To be there meant to be a part of history.Apart from the live recording this DVD contains a documentary film about the concert and an interview with the Beatles about their impressions of that extraordinary event.
