  The Flatlanders are Joe Ely Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock. They initially formed in 1972 but only lasted one year because they were completely rejected by the country music establishment. This may have been in part due to their unconventional yet complimentary styles - Joe the street-wise rocker Jimmie Dale the mystic with the classic country voice and Butch the cerebral folk singer.
