Arthur Golden's blockbuster bestseller Memoirs Of A Geisha has been brilliantly brought to the big screen by Oscar-nominated director Rob Marshall. The film opens in a remote Japanese fishing village in 1929 where two sisters Chiyo and Satsu are sold by their troubled father to people who place Chiyo in a classy geisha house known as an okiya in Gion and Satsu in a much more vulgar and dangerous district. Chiyo becomes a maid to Hatsumomo a cold controlling and calculating geisha who is instantly jealous of Chiyo's unusual beautiful eyes and childish innocence. Chiyo is befriended by Pumpkin another maid at the okiya but the two are soon driven apart. Chiyo is shown compassion by the Chairman and another more successful geisha Mameha who takes her under her wing as her little sister furthering the battle between Chiyo now called Sayuri and Hatsumomo. As Sayuri is trained in the art of being a geisha learning how to walk talk dance and serve (up to a point) in order to please and honor her distinguished male clients World War II looms on the horizon threatening to upend Japan and its old ways. Memoirs Of A Geisha is a lush sweeping historical and romantic Oscar-winning epic featuring gorgeous period costumes - primarily the exquisite kimono worn by the geisha. Featuring a fantastic cast of Ziyi Zhang (in her first English speaking role) Michelle Yeoh Ken Watanabe and Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa with an enchanting score from John Williams. Winner of 3 Oscars for Best Costume Design Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

A refreshing take on a well-tried formula, The Banger Sisters proves that there is always room for a polished new "women's picture", particularly one with a high astringent content. The eponymous sisters are a couple of girlfriends with a groupie past who haven't seen each other for years. Suzette (an ebullient Goldie Hawn) has remained a confirmed rock chick. When she's sacked from her bar job, she goes in search of Vinnie (Susan Sarandon) who has excised her past from her life as a staid wife and mother. The performances are good and there are some cracking moments, not least as the initially resistant Sarandon seizes the memory of her youth and sheds her skin of respectability to the bewilderment of her husband and two daughters. Suzette's visit is the catharsis her old friend has long needed. (In many ways, of course, the most interesting aspect of the picture is the one we don't get to see: the long-term consequences of some pretty sleazy old revelations on a middle class family). But there's a pleasing poignancy in Hawn's decision to go home, her work done. And Geoffrey Rush, as usual, is outstanding as Harry, the neurotic writer she has picked up on the way and who could, just possibly, provide some stability in her itinerant life. On the DVD: The Banger Sisters is presented in widescreen with a throbbing Dolby soundtrack. There are no extras. --Piers Ford

The schoolgirl adventures of Madeline, a flame-haired orphan, are lovingly adapted from Ludwig Bemelmans's classic children's books. His sly and witty writing is transferred to this first-rate film, one that should not be thought of merely as childhood entertainment. Spunky Madeline is most adept at finding trouble. She is also a quick-witted and likeable child who can solve almost any problem. Her latest scheme is to keep her school, which is also her home, from being sold by its owner, the recently widowed Lord Covington (Nigel Hawthorne). Unlike most youthful movie fare, this adventure boasts high production values that wisely include colour ful Parisian locations. Hatty Jones is all spunky self-sufficiency and sweet innocence in the title role, and Frances McDormand is quite humorous as the stern school-mistress, Miss Clavel. --Rochelle O'Gorman
