Title Comprise: Bundy (Dir.Matthew Bright 2002): The accounts vary and the actual number will never be known but the deaths of at least 36 women can be attributed to Theodore Robert Bundy. This biographical horror film begins in Seattle in 1974 where the duplicitous nature of Bundy (Michael Reilly Burke) becomes unmistakably evident. He is working as a polite crisis hotline volunteer but his callers don't know that he is secretly a sexual deviant in a bow tie whose sexual desires become increasingly perverse until they culminate in his killing spree. Meanwhile an unsuspecting girlfriend (named ""Lee"" in the film this woman--played by Boti Ann Bliss--wrote a book about her life with Bundy under the alias Elizabeth Kendall) dotes on her lover whose crimes would go unsolved for years. The film follows Bundy's murderous trail through two prison escapes and his eventual execution in Florida. Ed Gein (Dir.Chuck Parello 2000): Ed Gein (Steve Railsback) is a simple man who wants to lead a simple life on his family's farm. But the farm is remote the family is gone the crops perished long ago and the ghosts of Ed's past are coming back to haunt him. Ed always did have peculiar interests: reincarnation head-shrinking cannabilism and female anatomy but after his mother's death his obsessions escalate and freshly buried female bodies are starting to disappear. With the help of 'Gray's Anatomy' the skin of the corpses is fashioned into lamps and furniture and even a full bodysuit. The Hillside Strangler (Dir.Chuck Parello 2004): October '77 a Strangled naked and twisted corpse of a young woman is left for all to see on a hillside - the cops treat it as just another random killing among many in the City of Angels. But this one's different... As the body count rises each case seems linked to the previous; they all bear the same gruesome hallmarks of an insatiably sadistic serial sex killer and the media catches on branding the perpetrator 'The Hillside Strangler'. Little do the public and police know the killings aren't the work of a single killer but two men bound by the blood of their victims and the blood they share in their veins. As the search begins the two men find their voracious blood lust rising again and again...

The Demons Franco's shameless cash in on Ken Russell's the Devils is a true Franco masterpiece featuring everything from torture lesbian sex and demonic possession. The film centres on a witch who is burned at the stake by the inquisition but who before the flames consume her manages to curse the principal witchfinder and his minions with dire results. What follows is a catalogue of depravity and sexual violence on a truly orgiastic scale while Franco's camera gleefully captures every perverse moment and gratuitous exposure of female flesh!

• Beethoven: Symphonies 3 & 9 -- Berlin PO/Abbado | DVD | (31/03/2003) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The celebrated Claudio Abbado conducts the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Beethoven's Third and Ninth Symphonies. No. 9 comes first, in a performance given in the Berlin Philharmonie hall for the year 2000 Europe Concert; the finale of Beethoven's masterpiece having been coopted as the anthem of the European Union, this tenth annual concert emphasised unification in an international broadcast seen by millions worldwide. Abbado is as qualified to conduct this music as anyone alive and brings a deeply sympathetic reading from the BPO, eliciting a particularly spirited and uplifting second movement Molto vivace and eloquently moving Adagio. The epic choral finale features the combined forces of the Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson Chamber Choir together with top international soloists, including the soprano Karita Mattila. The result is exhilarating, rapturous music-making which is never overwhelming but which truly captures the joy of Schiller's text. Recorded in February 2001 at the National Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome, a fine performance of Beethoven's Third Symphony, "Eroica" completes the programme. The two venues ensure some visual contrast in both pieces, with Abbado a compelling figure to watch as he delivers this incomparable music. On the DVD: Beethoven Symphonies 3 amp; 9 is presented anamorphically enhanced at 16:9 ratio with a strong, clear picture and sound options covering PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. The last of these is the best, the surround speakers being used subtly to give a real sense of live concert-hall ambience and an enveloping spread of the choirs in the Ninth. Other than a reasonably informative booklet the only significant extra is a multi-angle option for No. 3. With this selected the camera remains on Abbado throughout, offering a useful orchestra's eye view for musicians and conducting students. Finally there is a sound-check to test for the correct connection of surround speakers. --Gary S Dalkin
