In the early 1980s Granada's Alfresco gave early exposure to six young comedians who would become household names within a few years of its transmission. Having engaged Ben Elton as writer (a choice made by Rik Mayall who was originally to star) the show's producer Sandy Ross found his participants at the Edinburgh Fringe; Stephen Fry Hugh Laurie Emma Thompson Paul Shearer and Siobhan Redmond were then invited to take part in a sketch-based show that was intended to rival the BBC's Monty Python and more recently Not the Nine O'Clock News. The resulting mini-series screened only in the North-West in 1982 as There's Nothing to Worry About! was reborn a year later as Alfresco with Robbie Coltrane replacing Paul Shearer. Running for two series Alfresco was notable not only for its contributors but the originality of its format; the use of hand-held recording equipment (previously only used in news bulletins) ensured an innovative fresh feel for its many outdoor scenes. This complete set features both series of Alfresco and all three episodes of There's Nothing to Worry About!

  • Persuasion [1995]Persuasion | DVD | (01/11/1999) from £12.95   |  Saving you £7.04 (54.36%)   |  RRP £19.99

After a slow beginning, in which the complex tangle of relationships is initially confusing, this BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's last novel, Persuasion, develops into an elegant romantic comedy. Austin combines a subtle dissection of the folly of class with a slow-burning, intensely passionate love story. Anne Elliot (Amanda Root) has loved Captain Wentworth (Ciaran Hinds) ever since she was persuaded to reject him years before. Now he has returned from the Napoleonic wars, but will love be allowed to blossom? Especially when Anne is surrounded by the selfish, petty-minded Mary, misguided by Lady Russell, and burdened by a father obsessed with fairness of countenance above all other considerations. Excepting a basic booklet, on-screen character biographies and a Dolby Digital soundtrack, there is nothing to distinguish this DVD from the video version. The picture is very good, but showing some grain, not exceptional, so unless you have a large television there is little advantage over tape. In any format, what makes this adaptation work is the sharp screenplay by Nick Dear and the naturalistic style of director Roger Mitchell (who joined the A-list with Notting Hill, 1999), together eliciting fine performances from the ensemble cast. Less flamboyant than Pride and Prejudice (1995), this is a civilised treat. --Gary S Dalkin

When a Man Loves a Woman is a dumb title (not another classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on The Lost Weekend, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but When a Man Loves a Woman is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film is grounded in the actual experience of co-writer Al Franken (assisted by Rain Man scripter Ronald Bass). Franken is best known for his affiliation with Saturday Night Live and Politically Incorrect, and as the author of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations. You may recall that Franken is the creator of Stuart Smalley, 12-step programmer extraordinaire. Well, if you want to know how Stuart was born, you can start here. This is no comedy, however. In fact, one of the most painful realisations comes when attractive, "good-time girl" Alice Green (Ryan) and her husband (Andy Garcia) begin to realise how much of a role alcohol played in their marriage and in bringing them together in the first place. The issues and experiences confronted in this movie go far beyond the stuff you see on daytime TV. --Jim Emerson
