Released from prison following his mother's murder. Henry (Michael Rooker, JFK) supplements his job as an exterminator with a series of violent, indiscriminate murders. Crazed drug dealer and fellow jailbird Otis (Tom Towles) provides Henry with a willing accomplice in his grisly pursuits but as the depravity escalates and Henry begins to form a tentative bond with Otis' sister Becky (Tracy Arnold) events spiral towards a chilling and violent conclusion. Based on the harrowing true story of convicted mass-murderer Henry Lee Lucas (portrayed with a dead-eye passivity by a magnetic rooker), John McNaughtonis (Mad Dog and Glory, Wild Things) Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer is one of the most remarkable films in the crowded serial killer genre. Impressively building to a disquieting and horrific climax, the film provides a sobering and nightmarish glimpse into a deranged and damaged mind. A bona-fide cult classic that as well as being long unavailable is presented here for the first time in its entirety and as the director intended: it's a startling, morally complex and frequently uncompromising work of genuine daring and vision.

Artie (Billy Crystal) and Diane (Bette Midler) realise that they're the "other grandparents"--the ones their three grandkids barely know and dread seeing. So when they have a chance to take care of Harper (Bailee Madison), Turner (Joshua Rush), and Barker (Kyle Harrison Breitkopf), Diane jumps at it, dragging a reluctant Artie along. Naturally, their old-school approach to parenting clashes with the anxious, helicopter-parenting of their daughter Alice (Marisa Tomei) and her husband Phil (Tom Everett Scott). Which will win out? There's really no suspense--contemporary parenting is an easy target and every time Artie complains about how the kids are indulged, random strangers applaud him. However, as Artie's parenting technique yoyos between threats and bribery, movie audiences may find themselves on Alice's side. Parental Guidance is a flimsy movie built around cartoonish kids with cliché problems and jokes about poop and getting hit in the crotch. The plot eventually gets stuck in a mire of nostalgia and vanity (did Midler really have to have a musical number?). But along the way there are moments between kids and grandparents--and between parents and grandparents--that are genuinely sweet. Midler is just coasting through this, but Crystal, who remains a talented and charismatic actor, puts his heart into it. --Bret Fetzer

  • Plebs - Series One [DVD]Plebs - Series One | DVD | (29/05/2017) from £10.99   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

Now here's a surprise. Plebs may have slipped under many people's radars prior to its relatively quiet debut on ITV2, but off the back of growing word of mouth, the show's DVD release became just a little more anticipated. With good reason too: even though the central idea may sound a bit gimmick, Plebs is something of a comedy pleasure. It's not a classic, but it's an assured and entertaining maiden run. The foundations of the show ask the idea just what it was like to be an everyday, nine-to-five worker in the midst of ancient Rome. Thus we follow two men, Marcus and Stylax, along with their slave Grumio, who show us the answers to that question. Ryan Sampson, in fact, steals the show as the lazy Grumio, but the charm of his co-stars, Tom Rosenthal and Joel Fry shouldn't be overlooked. There are plenty of laughs throughout Plebs, even though there's potential for more, and often, it's the delivery of the material that lifts it, rather than the sense of excellent scripts at the heart of it all. But then, there are plenty of good ideas, and it's an entertaining, well-realised show. What's more, it feels as if there's plenty left in the tank here for a second series, too. --Jon Foster

Club Dread (Dir. Jay Chandrasekhar 2004): When a serial killer interrupts the fun at the swanky Coconut Pete's Coconut Beach Resort a hedonistic island paradise for swingers - it's up to the club's staff to stop the violence. If not at least hide it! Super Troopers (Dir. Jay Chandrasekhar 2002): Captain O'Hagen tries in vain to control the imaginations and hormones of his bumbling team of five Vermont Highway Patrolmen. But when the opportunity to solve a real crime rolls their way the formerly inept Super Troopers pounce into action to become highway heroes. Freddy Got Fingered (Dir. Tom Green 2001): Outrageous MTV star Tom Green blows away the boundaries of good taste again - violating so many sacred cows (not to mention horses elephants and deers) it makes 'Freddy Got Fingered' a must-see comedy. Anything goes when wannabe animator Gord Brody leaves the safety of his parents' basement to make it big in Hollywood and meet the paraplegic nymphomaniac of his dreams. With lots of hilarious scenes - and so many reasons to be offended - it's no wonder people can't stop talking about 'Freddy Got Fingered'.

The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is the film all Harry Potter fans have waited 10 years to see, and the good news is that it's worth the hype--visually stunning, action packed, faithful to the book, and mature not just in its themes and emotion but in the acting by its cast, some of whom had spent half their lives making Harry Potter movies. Part 2 cuts right to the chase: Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has stolen the Elder Wand, one of the three objects required to give someone power over death (a.k.a. the Deathly Hallows), with the intent to hunt and kill Harry. Meanwhile, Harry's quest to destroy the rest of the Horcruxes (each containing a bit of Voldemort's soul) leads him first to a thrilling (and hilarious--love that Polyjuice Potion!) trip to Gringotts Bank, then back to Hogwarts, where a spectacular battle pitting the young students and professors (a showcase of the British thesps who have stolen every scene of the series: Maggie Smith's McGonagall, Jim Broadbent's Slughorn, David Thewlis's Lupin) against a dark army of Dementors, ogres, and Bellatrix Lestrange (Helena Bonham Carter, with far less crazy eyes to make this round). As predicted all throughout the saga, Harry also has his final showdown with Voldemort--neither can live while the other survives--though the physics of that predicament might need a set of crib notes to explain. But while each installment has become progressively grimmer, this finale is the most balanced between light and dark (the dark is quite dark--several familiar characters die, with one significant death particularly grisly); the humor is sprinkled in at the most welcome times, thanks to the deft adaptation by Steve Kloves (who scribed all but one of the films from J.K. Rowling's books) and direction by four-time Potter director David Yates. The climactic kiss between Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), capping off a decade of romantic tension, is perfectly tuned to their idiosyncratic relationship, and Daniel Radcliffe has, over the last decade, certainly proven he was the right kid for the job all along. As Prof. Snape, the most perfect of casting choices in the best-cast franchise of all time, Alan Rickman breaks your heart. Only the epilogue (and the lack of chemistry between Harry and love Ginny Weasley, barely present here) stand a little shaky, but no matter: the most lucrative franchise in movie history to date has just reached its conclusion, and it's done so without losing its soul. --Ellen A. Kim

The lunatics are running the asylum in The Ninth Configuration--but are they really lunatics? Is Colonel Kane (Stacy Keach) really a noted psychiatrist assigned to supervise patients in an experimental government clinic or is he really "Killer" Kane, a decorated US Marine who committed atrocities in Vietnam before going insane? These are just some of the puzzles that will eventually be solved in this giddy and often brilliant drama created by William Peter Blatty, who wrote The Exorcist before going on to direct this adaptation of his own novel, Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane. A satirical study of war's traumatic aftermath, the film uses battle psychosis as the springboard for a delirious and scathingly intelligent human tragedy, laced with some of the wittiest dialogue you're ever likely to hear. The film boasts a veritable menagerie of crazy characters, all brought vividly to life by a stellar supporting cast. One patient is preparing a production of Shakespeare with an all-dog cast. Another is convinced he's Superman and the resident doctor can't seem to find his trousers. But there's a method to this madness and it takes a barroom brawl--one of the most memorable in film history--to provide the harsh slap of reality to Blatty's elaborate group therapy scheme. When the true purpose of The Ninth Configuration is revealed, the film (and particularly the fine performances of Keach and Wilson) offers a depth of compassionate sanity that may well take you completely by surprise. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
