  • Tom Green - Something Smells FunnyTom Green - Something Smells Funny | DVD | (04/05/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Something Smells Funny is US comedian Tom Green's breakthrough TV show, a series of skits that will have you chewing your fist in next to no time. Outside of the States, Green is best known for being married to Drew Barrymore, who positively bubbles with enthusiasm every time his name is mentioned. Beyond that, he remains something of a nothing, though the more media-savvy may be aware of Green's recent battle against testicular cancer, which, in typically fearless fashion, he filmed for the scrutiny of the American public. And if that's all you know about Green, think yourself lucky, because as an entertainer he sucks. He was that babbling buffoon on the boat in Charlie's Angels, the one who sailed into the sunset with Drew (naturally) at the end of the picture. Not put off? Well, he was also the narrator of Road Trip, the one who puts a live mouse in his mouth and expects it to bring the house down. And now comes the chance to slog through an hour's worth of material from his US TV show. Highlights include the lofty, goateed funnyman trying to open canned food with sticks of M-5000 dynamite; ripping the brains out of dead cows after cracking their skulls open with a baseball bat; and fishing turds out of public toilets with his bare hands. He also gains great mileage from humiliating his parents on camera: if he's not filling their house with llamas and donkeys he's arranging for their car to be spray-painted with lesbian pornography. They must be very proud. What's more, it's all done WITH THE VOLUME TURNED RIGHT UP, Green obviously thinking that the louder you scream the funnier it is. Wrong. --Jamie Graham

Based on the true experiences of Lt. Colonel Michael Strobl who wrote eloquently of them in a widely circulated 2004 article Taking Chance is a profoundly emotional look at the military rituals taken to honor its war dead as represented by a fallen Marine killed in Iraq Lance Corporal Chance Phelps. Working as a strategic analyst at Marine Corps Base Quantico in VA Lt. Col. Strobl (Kevin Bacon) learns that Phelps had once lived in his hometown and volunteers to escort the body to its final resting place in Wyoming. As Strobl journeys across America he discovers the great diligence and dignity in how the military and all those involved with preparing and transporting the body handle their duties. Equally important he encounters hundreds of people affected by Chances death a vast majority of whom never knew him. This collective grieving eventually causes Lt. Col. Strobl a veteran of Desert Storm now assigned to office duty to probe his own guilt about not re-deploying to Iraq for the current conflict. Arriving in Wyoming Lt. Col. Strobl completes his catharsis when he encounters Chances gracious family and friends and discovers an extraordinary outpouring of community support.

Vin Diesel is no James Bond, and he doesn't want to be. That's why XXX announced Diesel as the adrenalin-junkie Bond of the PlayStation generation, copying the Bond formula so shamelessly that this action-packed silliness would be a Bond movie if it starred Pierce Brosnan. Reuniting Diesel with his Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen, XXX has an attitude (if not a brain) all its own, plucking Diesel's Xander Cage from his celebrity as an extreme sports renegade, recruited by a National Security Agency big shot (Samuel L. Jackson) to foil a nasty Czech villain (Marton Csokas) who's eager to depopulate Prague with remote-controlled biological weaponry. Toss in a sulky, sultry Russian agent (Asia Argento) and you've got extreme Bond-age for anyone who thinks tuxedos are passé. With a handful of eye-popping action sequences, XXX launched a movie franchise with a cool guy, another cool muscle car, and plenty of box-office sizzle. --Jeff Shannon

  • Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire [Blu-ray]Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire | Blu Ray | (08/08/2016) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £N/A

The latest entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang, and has his first big fight with best bud Ron. Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold. But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Tri-Wizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation.--Ellen A. • Jacknife [1989]Jacknife | DVD | (27/08/2001) from £14.45   |  Saving you £-8.46 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Made in 1989 and set 15 years after the end of the Vietnam War, Jacknife tells the story of alcoholic trucker Dave (Ed Harris) who lives with his sister Martha (Kathy Baker). Robert De Niro is Megs, Dave's ex-'Nam sidekick who re-enters his life on the promise of a fishing trip. Megs and Martha embark on a tentative courtship to the seething fury of Dave, who considers Megs "bad news". However, through wartime flashbacks it soon becomes clear that his hitting the bottle is a means of bottling up his feelings about Vietnam, Megs and their mutual buddy Bobby, killed in action. Ruminative and romantic, Jacknife slow-burns its predictable though satisfying way to its resolution, the three main players carrying the burdens of their roles with admirable restraint, especially Ed Harris, whose rage is internalised at the expense of his liver. There are echoes of The Deerhunter but this is not a film of that order or scale, as its low-budget synthesiser soundtrack signifies, feeling at times like a superior made-for-TV affair. On the DVD: A full-screen version with a ratio of 4:3. Neither sound nor picture quality are exactly a showcase for DVD technology, both being a little fuzzy, while the dubbing goes noticeably awry on 42 minutes. Special features are decidedly un-special: the original, lugubrious trailer plus "talent profiles" which are merely lists of the main players' previous films. --David Stubbs

Mutant X takes the useful SF trope of the mutant minority persecuted by the state and adds potentially interesting spins on which it rarely delivers. After a couple of pilot episodes that pushed into OTT visual stylishness, the show has settled into mildly repetitive though watchable blandness: for the most part it avoids story arcs and a large cast of regulars in favour of plugging its characters into the stock plots of television SF, such as doubles, vengeance crusades and untrustworthy lovers. On the DVD: Mutant X Series 1, Volume 2 contains the following episodes: "The Meaning of Death". A plague that kills mutants forces Adam to work with Mason Eckhart and the invulnerable mercenary Marlowe in the knowledge that any cure he comes up with will lead to a double-cross. "Lit Fuse". Brennan is attracted to energy-absorbing Ashley, who is being set up for betrayal by bounty-hunter Cross. When she absorbs Brennan, things get really complicated. "In the Presence of Mine Enemies". Jesse's hacker girlfriend Toni is forced by Eckhart to betray Adam's hideout Sanctuary and the computerised journalist Proxy Blue. Can the tables be turned? "Crime of the New Century". Youthful mutant firestarter Joshua is kidnapped, rescued and then turned over to the GSA by a renegade FBI agent. "Dark Star Rising". The survivors of a commando team have been altered into mutancy by scientists and want vengeance for their dead squad members. Mutant X helps them stop Eckhart getting the secret serum. The DVDs also contain trailers, a feature on the elaborate stunts and interviews with stunt coordinator Paul Rapovski, show runner Howard Chaykin and Victor Webster (Brennan). --Roz Kaveney
