After viewing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote to Walt Disney about adapting his novel of an ape-man into a feature animated cartoon. Sixty odd years later, the tale is finally told with brilliant design work that looks unlike any previous animated film. The story is a natural for Disney since the themes of misunderstood central figures have been at the heart of most of its recent hits. Disney's Tarzan doesn't wander far from the familiar story of a shipwrecked baby who is brought up by apes in Africa. What gives the film its zing is its clever use of music (the songs are sung by Phil Collins himself rather than onscreen characters) and the remarkable animation. Deep Canvas, a 3-D technology, was developed for the film, creating a jungle that comes alive as Tarzan swings through the trees, often looking like a modern skateboarder racing down giant tree limbs. The usual foray of sidekicks, including a rambunctious ape voiced by Rosie O'Donnell, should keep the little ones aptly entertained. The two lead voices, Tony Goldwyn as Tarzan and Minnie Driver as Jane, are inspired choices. Their chemistry helps the story through the weakest points (the last third) and makes Tarzan's initial connection with all things human (including Jane) delicious entertainment. Disney still is not taking risks in its animated films, but as cookie-cutter entertainment, Tarzan makes a pretty good treat. On the DVD: It's the dish--mistakes, unused footage, creative differences, embarrassing behind-the-scene stories--that makes collector's editions so much fun. Unfortunately, this goes against the Disney philosophy of picture-perfection, and this two-set disc shows it; only half of the new material is engaging. The other half of this second disc, the "Tarzan Archives," is a slickly produced filler--more publicity fluff than real insight on the development of the film and the animation process. Much better are the three abandoned scenes (with voices and storyboards), including a much fiercer opening and ending, plus dozens of sketches made over the years as the designers pursued the luscious look of the film. The original audio demos Phil Collins made for the film are also intriguing (mostly filled with dummy or place-holding lyrics). The new audio commentary (by the producer and two directors) is a "fireside chat" variety, hardly worth more than one listen. Two side-by-side comparisons of storyboards to final film are a great tool to show youngsters how the animated process works, as is animator Glen Keane's talks on animating Tarzan. Also for kids: a read-along book and trivia game. --Doug Thomas

  • Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire [2000]Robbie The Reindeer In Hooves Of Fire | DVD | (27/11/2000) from £15.63   |  Saving you £-10.64 (N/A%)   |  RRP £4.99

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it. However, so much action, zippy dialogue and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. The content of the film, like many new animations and cartoons, is geared slightly in favour of older audiences, because of its sexual innuendos and adult comedy, but the kids will love the slapstick comedy and loveable characters. Robbie's father is another stop-motion favourite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and pop is keen to see his loveable--but lazy--son follow in his famous hoof prints. The adult theme continues in the shape of the storyline, which was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humour. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks as Donner. Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. --Kathleen C Fennessy, Amazon.com

  • Battlestar Galactica [1980]Battlestar Galactica | DVD | (26/03/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Battlestar Galactica was one of the first off the starting blocks in the rush to repeat the Box Office business of Star Wars. The original pilot episode was adapted for both cinema and television viewing, and this DVD features the more self-contained theatrical release, which eliminates certain plot threads (such as John Colicos's treacherous character Baltar). Mixing Egyptian, Greek and made-up mythologies and designs, the premise was almost too sprawling for a two-hour presentation. In the series, we'd go on to learn why there were only a handful of humans left floating around, and what their relationship with the eagerly sought planet Earth was. Here it's all about set up, with Apollo (Richard Hatch) and Starbuck (Dirk Benedict) stealing the show as the fighter pilots with all the charm and the best lines. Lorne Greene adds a classy element to the large-scale acting ensemble, as does an uncredited Patrick Macnee as narrator and voice of the villainous Cylon Leader. Producer/writer Glen A Larson debuted Buck Rogers in the 25th Century at almost the same time (again for both TV and cinema), but something about this has always made it the most fondly remembered Star Wars wannabe. It's a shame that the soundtrack, and Stu Phillips's cracking music in particular, is only presented in mono, but a clean digital transfer at least means that Daggits, Centons and all the other felgercarb look its best. Extras on the DVD include cast and filmmakers' biographies, production notes and Web links. --Paul Tonks
