Enjoyable on many levels ... OK, it's enjoyable on only one level--if you're a big fan of Mike Myers's screwball idea of funny. That this script had been through a lot of hands in Hollywood before Myers agreed to star in it (using his Wayne's World clout) seems amazing as most of the truly funny bits here seem to be straight from Myers. Most memorable is his role as his own irascible Scottish father, screaming at his youngest son and talking about the Bay City Rollers. But Myers also plays Charlie, a bookshop owner/poet who falls in love with a "hardhearted harbinger of haggis", the local butcher (Nancy Travis), who may also be a serial killer. Mostly enjoyable, but there's also some weird stuff here. Try as you might, you may never rid yourself of the image of Brenda Fricker and Anthony LaPaglia making out. Also features a great soundtrack with Soul Asylum and Toad the Wet Sprocket. --Keith Simanton
From acclaimed filmmaker Andrew Haigh comes a deeply moving story told through the unique prism of one boy s connection to a very special racehorse. 15-year-old Charley (Charlie Plummer) arrives in Portland, Oregon, with his single father Ray (Travis Fimmel), both eager for a fresh start after a series of hard knocks. While Ray descends into personal turmoil, Charley finds camaraderie at a local racetrack where he lands a job caring for an ageing quarter horse named Lean On Pete. The horse s gruff owner Del (Steve Buscemi) and his seasoned jockey Bonnie (Chloë Sevigny) help Charley fill the void of his father s absence until he discovers that Pete is bound for slaughter, prompting him to take extreme measures to spare his new friend s life. Charley and Pete head out into the great unknown, embarking on an odyssey across the new American frontier in search of a loving aunt Charley hasn t seen in years. They experience adventure and heartbreak in equal measure, but never lose their irrepressible hope and resiliency as they pursue their dream of finding a place they can call home. Featuring an award-winning performance by Plummer, Lean on Pete is a compassionate and heartrending look at the desire for love, family and acceptance.
Charlie Mackenzie (Mike Myers) is a love-shy poet living in San Francisco who frequents neighborhood coffee houses reciting his tortured odes to unrequited love. Burned by a string of failed relationships Mackenzie's fear of commitment has intensified into outrageous extremes of paranoia. When he finds himself falling for the sweet-faced butcher (Nancy Travis) at his local meat shop he sees it as a final chance for love to overcome his painful cynicism. Feeling he has squelched his nagging fears Mackenzie marries the woman. But his anxiety quickly manifests itself in the conviction that his wife is actually an infamous axe murderer whose antics are described in juicy detail in each week's issue of the Weekly World News...
When Goldie Hawn recommended Elizabeth Berkley for a small role in First Wives Club, she publicly stated that Berkley deserved the opportunity to redeem herself after starring in the ridiculous Showgirls. That says it all: this sleazy, stupid movie, which mixes soft pornography with the clichés of backstage dramas, is the kind of project an aspiring actress would have to put well behind her to keep a career going (though co-star Gina Gershon certainly benefited from her, uh, exposure in the film). Berkley plays a drifter who hitches a ride to Las Vegas, becomes a lap dancer and then a performer, and discovers--gasp!--there's a whole world of sex and violence involved with these things. Gershon is probably the best element in the film, playing Berkley's bisexual rival for the big spotlight on stage. Joe Eszterhas was well overpaid for writing this howler, and director Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct) should have known better than to take it seriously. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Directed by Chuck Parello, who had previously worked on Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer, Ed Gein is an in-depth psychological profile of the figure who served as inspiration for "Psycho", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Silence of the Lambs."

In the summer of 2001, Travis embarked on a rather hectic festival schedule which saw them headlining three huge gigs over the Bank Holiday weekend--the Reading and Leeds Festivals and Glasgow's Gig On The Green. More Than Us--Live in Glasgow is the final of the three shows, and captures them at their best. Coming on the back of the release of their third album The Invisible Band it was inevitable that most of the tracks would be culled from this, including instant favourites "Sing" and "Side", but they do keep a healthy amount of old favourites on the set list as well-"Driftwood", "Writing To Reach You", "All I Want To Do Is Rock" and "Why Does It Always Rain Me". Not that the crowd need winning over--this is a local concert for local people after all. They've come a long way from their humble beginnings as Oasis's favourite support act, so much so that Noel Gallagher is now seen watching from the wings. He looks suitably impressed, as he rightfully should be--this is a great performance from one of Britain's best-loved bands. On the DVD: The concert is accompanied by a video diary of the band on the road--with footage from their tour bus and backstage at the three gigs. Along with this is a wealth of special features including a great acoustic version of "More Than This" for the Jo Wiley show, which you can set up to be intercut with the concert footage or viewed as a separate film; a special playlist feature, which groups the tracks from the concerts in the order of the albums they come from to give you a chronological guide to Travis live and a full Travis discography. Recorded in Dolby 5.1 along with the option to view the concert from a total of four different angles. --Helen Marquis
