Elem Klimov's powerful mesmerising and dynamic award winning feature has been deservedly hailed as one of the greatest war films ever produced. Set in Soviet Belarus during the Second World War the story follows Florya a newly enlisted and innocent partisan as he staggers dazed and petrified through the merciless horror of the struggle against a cruel German aggressor. Essentially the film is a rite of passage and Florya's face physically ages during the progression of the film a

The first instalment of the late Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's trilogy on Liberty, Equality and Fraternity, the three colours of the French flag. Blue is the most sombre of the three, a movie dominated by feelings of grief. As the film begins, a car accident claims the life of a well-known composer. His wife, played by Juliette Binoche (Oscar winner for The English Patient), does not so much put the pieces of her life back together as start an entirely new existence. She moves to Paris, where she dissolves into a wordless life virtually without other people. Kieslowski attaches an almost subconscious significance to the colour blue but primarily he focuses on Binoche's luminous face and the way her subtle shifts in emotion flicker and disappear. The picture may be more enigmatic than the follow-ups White and Red but Binoche's quiet, heartbreaking presence becomes spellbinding; her performance won the best actress prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1993. --Robert Horton

  • Cross Of Iron [1977]Cross Of Iron | DVD | (18/04/2005) from £6.94   |  Saving you £10.05 (144.81%)   |  RRP £16.99

In Cross of Iron Sam Peckinpah weighs in on World War II from the German point of view. The result is as bleak, if not quite as bloody, as one expects from the director of The Wild Bunch, in part because this 1977 film was cut to ribbons by nervous studio executives. The assorted excerpts that remain don't constitute an exhilarating or even an especially thrilling battle epic. The war is grinding to a close, and veterans like James Coburn's Steiner are grimly aware that it's a lost cause. The battlefield is a death trap of sucking mud and barbed wire, and the German generals (viz., the martinet played by James Mason) seem to pose a bigger threat to the life and limbs of Steiner's men than the inexorable enemy. Not even Peckinpah's famous sensuous exuberance when shooting violence is much in evidence; the picture is a depressive, claustrophobically overcast experience. The bloody high (or low) point isn't a shooting; it's a wince-inducing de-penis-tration during oral sex. For a fun time with the men in (Nazi) uniform, try Das Boot instead. --David Chute, Amazon.com

" Winner of both the Best Director and the Jury Prizes at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival, Vojtěch Jasný's auto-biographical All My Good Countrymen is one of the wonders of the Czech New Wave - but also one of the least-known films from that miraculous era of Czech filmmaking. Completed barely before the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 it was immediately banned and never shown. It's deceptively simple narrative weaves a complex tapestry around the interwoven lives and stories of a group of Moravian villagers immediately following the socialization of Czechoslovakia in 1948. Director Vojtěch Jasný, hailed ""the spiritual father of the Czech New Wave"" by Miloš Forman, fled Czecholslovakia following the completion of this film and went into exile rather than recant. A pronounced influence on later films like Edgar Reitz's Heimat and Michael Haneke's The White Ribbon, Jasný's film remains a potent reminder of lives and idealism lost under totalitarianism. ""The film and the milieu it so precisely evokes are not so much nostalgic as they are powerfully remembered and irrevocably lost.... All My Good Countrymen reflects the curdled fury of a former true believer"" J. Hoberman, The Village Voice ""A work of great lyricism, humour and originality"" Gary Tooze, DVD Beaver ""Extraordinary poetic... the masterpiece of Vojtěch Jasný - father of that brilliant flowering of Czechoslovak cinema"" The New York Time s ""Jasný’s lyrical masterpiece"" Radio Praha ""A bitter-sweet, affectionate and pointed picture of a life many Czechs would have recognised. This high-energy Dirty Harry in Japan stars Jean Reno (The Professional) as a maverick Paris cop with sledgehammer fists and a short temper. Promoted to sudden fatherhood when he "inherits" a spunky Japanese daughter (Ryoko Hirosue) he never knew, he becomes her droopy guardian angel, protecting her from an army of yakuza gangsters. Written and produced by Luc Besson, the former fashionista director of Euro-sleek shoot-'em-ups, this colorful B-movie blast is as gritty as an oil slick on a water slide but packed with explosive action. Director Gerard Krawczyk punctuates his gunfights with the Hong Kong school of recoil (bullets blast victims across the screen) and an undercurrent of humor. As long as you don't lean too hard on such niggling details as logic, legality, and the laws of physics, this silly, splashy, family bonding bulletfest is a spirited good time.

Inspired by an actual incident, this unassuming, wonderfully good-natured romantic comedy tells the story of a New York City street cop named Charlie (Nicolas Cage) who makes a promise to a coffee-shop waitress named Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) that will change both their lives. One day after coffee, Charlie is embarrassed to discover he doesn't have money for a tip, so he tells Yvonne that he'll share half of his winnings if the lottery ticket he's holding comes up a winner. Sure enough, he wins the jackpot--a whopping US$4 million payoff--and Charlie's wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez), goes ballistic when he tells her about his deal with Yvonne. From this point, It Could Happen to You follows Charlie's dilemma as he is forced to decide the proper course of action, and director Andrew Bergman smoothly incorporates a gentle love story into this amusing crisis of conscience. Fonda and Cage have an easygoing chemistry that adds a pleasant touch to the movie's fairy-tale plot, and It Could Happen to You's kindhearted sentiment is never so thick that it becomes sticky-sweet or artificial. As feel-good comedies go, this one's a class act. --Jeff Shannon

  • Diabolique [1996]Diabolique | DVD | (28/01/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £18.99

Diabolique is Jeremiah Chechik's 1996 revamped version of the 1955 French film noir tale of two teachers at a boys school conspiring to kill the headmaster (played in the remake by Chazz Palminteri of Jade and The Usual Suspects). The three assemble an intriguing triangle of revenge and deceit as the headmaster's abused and humiliated wife and mistress team up to get even. Mia Baran is the fragile wife with a delicate heart condition, portrayed by Isabelle Adjani (Queen Margot), and Sharon Stone (Basic Instinct) is the plotting, contemptuous mistress. Together they set out to wreak an unfortunate revenge, but as the story reveals itself, miscalculations abound as hidden agendas and secret lives are unexpectedly exposed. Chechik's new look and timeless setting give film noir audiences something neoteric and seductive to play with. A welcomed change to the film's story line is the fresh addition of Kathy Bates as a daunting private detective. Fans of Stone's will not be disappointed with the latest version of her "I-could-give-a-damn smoldering broad" technique and anyone not yet familiar with Chazz Palminteri will love watching him succeed as the ultimately despicable headmaster. --Michele Goodson
