  The film that brought Jacques Tati international acclaim also launched his on-screen alter ego: the courteous well-meaning eternally accident prone Monsieur Hulot with whom Tati would from now on be inseparably associated. As with Jour de f''te the film is set in a sleepy French coastal resort which is seasonally disrupted by holidaymakers in energetic pursuit of fun. At the centre of the chaos is the eccentric Hulot struggling at all times to maintain appearances but somehow entirely divorced from his immediate surroundings. There is little plot in Tati's beautifully orchestrated 'ballet' of comic action: it's a series of incidents a seamless succession of gently mocking studies of human absurdity.

  Set in Brighton in 1951, Wish You Were Here contrasts an England of post-war conformity with the free-spirited nature of a girl, Lynda, on the verge of womanhood, played by the then 17-year-old Emily Lloyd, giving one of the great screen debuts. Filled with youthful energy, good-natured yet delighting in shocking the prudish world around her, Lynda is innocently flirtatious and eager to discover sex. She can't quite understand why everyone disapproves so much, and the film expertly balances uproarious comedy with drama in what is essentially a complex character study. The second, darker half has shades of Lolita, with the excellent Tom Bell in the older man role, while Lynda herself in some ways anticipates Laura Dern's Rambling Rose (1991). Director David Leland also wrote the Brighton thriller, Mona Lisa (1986), and Personal Services (1987) based on the true story of the madam, Cynthia Payne. It is on Payne's own early memories, as told to Leland, that the fictional Wish You Were Here is partly based, while Leland went on to further explore female sexual awakening in The Land Girls (1997), again exploring female sexual awakening --Gary S.   The Case of Charles Peace a 1949 John Argyle Production made at Merton Park Studios released by Monarch. This film is based on a true story nicely directed by Norman Lee and it is a minor gem not because it won awards had a great cast or a huge budget but because it's a small British production that entertains. Lead Michael Martin Harvey a relative unknown and as a mixture of Robin Hood and the devil is oddly hypnotic in the role. The film very cleverly recounts the exploits through the trial of Charles Peace. The film has been restored to a good quality.

This film and another Toff adaptation Hammer the Toff was shot back-to-back at Nettlefold Studios in the summer of 1951. They were released to cinemas in January and May 1952 respectively. Worried when her boss goes missing secretary Fay (Carol Marsh) seeks the help of society sleuth 'The Toff' (John Bentley). The Toff finds a dead body and is attacked in a hotel during his search for missing boss Draycott (Tony Britton). Aided throughout by Inspector Grice (Valentine Dyall) and The Toffs wonderfully camp butler (Roddy Hughes). Long thought lost the film has been restored to a good standard.
