B.R. Chopra's Karm based on the novel 'Pao Nai Parichay' is the story of conflict between man's actions and his destiny. Arvind (Rajesh Khanna) is the son of a judge while Asha (Vidya Sinha) is the daughter of a learned astrologer. They are in love and decide to marry but Asha's father opposes the same as he predicts Arvind's death on the eve of marriage if he enters marital union with Asha. The lovers decide to defy society and cheat the effect of the prediction by living together out of wedlock. In time however Arvind and Asha realise that they cannot pattern an existence independent of social laws Arvind's developing career in law is thwarted by this illegal act. Asha now pregnant decides to leave Arvind for the sake of his career. A forlorn Arvind marries Neelam (Shabana Azmi). Asha gives birth to a baby boy. Her love continues to haunt Arvind in his dreams. Not only did it become one of thespian Sanjeev Kumar's most unforgettably comic performances it won Kamleshwar the Filmfare award for Best Screenplay and has the entertaining song Thande Thande Pani which became one of Ravindra Jain's biggest hits.
