Based on a novel by Kotaro Isaka, Fish Story weaves together several seemingly separate storylines taking place at different points in time over a 37-year span to explain how a little-known punk rock song can save the world. In 1975, an unpopular Japanese punk band called Gekirin (Wrath) break up soon after recording their final song: Fish Story. In 1982 a timid college student named Masashi (Gaku Hamada) becomes fascinated by strange rumors surrounding the song. In 2009 a teenager named Asami (Mikako Tabe) falls asleep during a school field trip and gets left behind on a boat which is taken over by terrorists. In 2012 a huge comet can be seen in the sky on a path to destroy Earth. How does a little punk song connect all these events? From Peter Greenaway (Nightwatching, The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover), one of the most inventive, ambitious and controversial film-makers of our time, comes a sumptuous period drama told in explicit detail, exploring the life of celebrated 16th century Dutch printer and engraver of erotic prints Hendrik Goltzius. Attempting to seduce the Margrave of Alsace (F. Murray Abraham, Amadeus, Homeland) into paying for a printing press to make and publish his erotic imagery, Goltzius promises the Margrave a spectacular illustration of the Old Testament s biblical stories: erotic takes on figures such as Adam and Eve, Lot and his daughters, Samson & Delilah and John the Baptist & Salome. To tempt the Margrave further, Goltzius and his printing company offer to perform dramatisations of these erotic tales for his court... Recently awarded Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema at the 2014 BAFTA s, Peter Greenaway returns to the cinematic arena of The Draughtsman s Contract with GOLTZIUS AND THE PELICAN COMPANY, a film that showcases Greenaway s hallmarks of breath-taking visual framing and a fascination with sex and death. Winner of the award for Best Film Out of Official Competition at Rome Film Festival, GOLTZIUS AND THE PELICAN COMPANY is Peter Greenaway s second biopic on Dutch Masters (following Rembrandt portrait Nightwatching).
The whimsical comedy-romance Heaven Can Wait is a delightful example of the small sub-genre of afterlife comedies. The film, which teams then lovers Warren Beatty and Julie Christie for a third time following McCabe and Mrs Miller (1971) and Shampoo (1975), is not a remake of the 1943 supernatural film of the same name, but of the Robert Montgomery classic Here Comes Mr Jordan (1941). Here Beatty is American football player Joe Pendleton, who accidentally dies, decades too early, and is incarnated in a new body which, until recently, was occupied by a ruthless multi-millionaire. James Mason is superb as a most authoritative angel (Mr Jordan), heading a fine cast including Charles Grodin, Buck Henry and Jack Warden. In a sub-plot paralleling The Shop Around the Corner (1940) and revisited in You've Got Mail (1998), Julie Christie plays an English woman outraged that one of the former millionaire's companies is destroying her village, while simultaneously falling in love with the man now occupying the hated millionaire's mortal coil. Much comic and romantic misunderstanding follows, as well as some appealing slapstick, courtesy of Dyan Cannon. Aided by a lovely musical score by Dave Grusin, this is a beautifully played and thoroughly charming bittersweet fantasy about the transcendent power of love. It is a joy for romantics everywhere. On the DVD: Heaven Can Wait comes to DVD in a good 1.77:1 ratio transfer which exhibits just a little grain in some darker scenes. The print shows some very minor, occasional damage, but nothing to complain about in a film of this vintage. The sound is the original mono mix, which is perfectly serviceable. The only extra is the theatrical trailer. --Gary S Dalkin

The directorial debut of the great Joseph L Mankiewicz (All About Eve; Suddenly, Last Summer), Dragonwyck is a glorious melding of Gothic chills and baroque melodrama. A beautiful Connecticut farm girl (Gene Tierney) finds herself embroiled in a conspiracy of madness, murder and intrigue after she agrees to become governess and nurse to the family of her distant cousin (Vincent Price). Echoing Hitchcock's Rebecca (1940), and reuniting stars Tierney and Price for the third time in as many years (having previously starred together in Otto Preminger's Laura, 1944, and John M Stahl's Leave Her to Heaven, 1945), Dragonwyck is a magnificently creepy chiller with a career-defining performance by Price, luminous cinematography by the legendary Arthur C Miller, and a wonderful Alfred Newman score.
