Track Of The Vampire: An artist in Venice California named Antonio Sordi (William Campbell) becomes convinced he is the descendant of 15th century vampires in this strange film partially directed by Jack Hill (Spider Baby Foxy Brown). It's an interesting surreal piece of low-budget exploitation as Sordi murders women drains them of their blood and then dips them in wax and paints them. Marissa Mathes plays one of the victims as does Sandra Knight. Lori Saunders is a ballerina whom Sordi becomes convinced is the reincarnation of his ancestor's dead lover. If the film seems at times bizarre it may be because Hill centered it around footage from a 1963 Yugoslavian picture called Operation Titian to which he then added English-speaking scenes. After conflicts with producer Roger Corman Hill left the film and fellow Corman protegee Stephanie Rothman completed the work and added the vampire element. Regardless of authorship and some disjointed elements the film maintains an eerie tone and should find a place in the hearts of low budget horror fans. Corman regulars Jonathan Haze and Sid Haig also appear in supporting roles. Nightmare Castle: A jealous mad scientist savagely murders his faithless wife and her lover. Using the dead couple's blood he conducts a bizarre experiement on rejuvenation. To complete his revenge he then seeks to marry his late wife's sister after realizing that she has been left with the inheritance. In 1956 the title of his latest film, Up in the World accurately described Norman Wisdom's career. This was the great British comedian's fourth hit in as many years, this time finding himself employed as window cleaner to Lady Banderville (Ambrosine Phillpotts). Apart from having hundreds of windows to polish, things would be going fine for Norman if it weren't for the endless practical jokes played by Lady Banderville's son, Sir Reginald (Michael Caridia). However, when the irritating Regie is kidnapped, Norman has the chance to prove himself a hero, and it just might impress Jeannie Andrews too, his beautiful co-star Maureen Swanson, then making a name for herself in A Town Like Alice and The Spanish Gardener (both 1956). By now Norman Wisdom was set on a winning formula, working with much the same team as on his three previous smashes, including Jerry Desmonde as Major Willoughby, who had starred in both Trouble in Store (1953) and Man of the Moment (1955). Later, in Carry On Regardless (1961) Desmonde would make a single appearance with another British comedy institution, and interestingly Ambrosine Phillpotts would be there in the same film. Norman meanwhile, would go on to his good fortune in Just My Luck (1957). --Gary S. Dalkin

Breakout is a 1975 jailbreak vehicle for Charles Bronson and wife Jill Ireland. It also stars Robert Duvall as Jay Wagner, framed by his wealthy but scheming grandfather (John Huston) and sentenced to 28 years in a Mexican jail. Ireland plays his concerned wife who enlists the help of small-time pilot Nick Colton (Bronson) to get Duvall out of jail in an audacious escape plot. While supporting actors such as Randy Quaid as Bronson's sidekick bring a little enthusiasm to their parts, the major players do not. Bronson and Ireland deliver their parts with the stiltedness of a first run-through, while Robert Duvall's mind seems entirely elsewhere, as if he's unable to believe he's involved in such an inauspicious project. His character seems strangely indifferent to his fate, an indifference which spreads swiftly to the audience. The escape sequence takes an eternity to arrive and when it does is almost breathtakingly underwhelming. Only the gruesomely depicted death of a bad guy, slashed to pieces by a propeller on a runaway, strikes a pleasingly jarring note. Otherwise, you almost feel sorry for this film, so manifestly unloved is it by those who conceived and participated in it. On the DVD: Breakout on disc is presented in anamorphic widescreen format. There are no extras other than subtitles. --David Stubbs
