James Dean - The Rare Movies | DVD | (17/03/2003)
from £25.00
| Saving you £-12.01 (N/A%)
| RRP In some ways, calling this collection James Dean: The Rare Movies is a little misleading. After all, the "all-purpose delinquent"--as described in David Dalton's fascinating booklet notes--made only three feature films and, in true iconic style, died a youthful, violent death. Yet the collection works somewhat on an ironic level. The 1950s was a decade in which television established itself as the biggest threat to the cinematic medium, and this is a selection of some of the television dramas and commercials that Dean made on his way up to Hollywood stardom, presented with the same introductions and sponsors' messages of the original transmissions. So how good was he at the beginning? All the raw material was there: the restless misfit, the damaged juvenile and the complex punk. In 1954's "I am a Fool" he stars with Natalie Wood in what turned out to be a rehearsal for Rebel Without a Cause on the big screen. At times he moves with an almost balletic grace, at others he twitches with that awkwardness that still leaves new generations of fans totally enthralled. Television was never going to contain him. This is like watching history in the making and is all the more compelling because we know the tragedy that lay but a short way ahead. On the DVD: It scarcely matters that these television dramas and commercials are presented in 4:3 format. The picture quality is inevitably poor and the sound rough, sometimes to the point of inaudibility. Made in television's explosive adolescence, they were never intended to be monuments to technological brilliance. We're just lucky they've survived at all. The track selection offers a maze-like array of choices for you to skip between films, introductions and commercial breaks and occasionally this can be confusing. A chronology on the DVD itself would have helped.--Piers Ford

The Rolling Stones - Live At The Max | DVD | (26/11/1999)
from £12.98
| Saving you £7.01 (54.01%)
| RRP This 1991 concert film was shot in the IMAX format and was originally presented on enormous IMAX screens, with outstanding visual and audio clarity. The dimensions may have been scaled down for this DVD release, but the show is still huge in energy and talent. Filmed during a European leg of the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels tour, this production boasts 15 songs and an extraordinary stage set with inflatable floozies (for "Honky Tonk Woman") and wild dogs (rather cleverly for "Street Fighting Man"). The Stones' set emphasises material from the late 1960s and early 70s ("Tumbling Dice", "Happy", "You Can't Always Get What You Want"), but the band's performance is so furious that the show is far from a pandering oldies act. Highlights include "Paint it Black", at once brutal and delicate, as well as a muscular "Rock and a Hard Place", a psychedelicised "2,000 Light Years from Home", and a cheeky "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll". Once kings of a gloriously sloppy sound, the Stones prove to be as effective in their artistic maturity with small, breathtaking touches as they are with chunky orchestration. Guitarists Keith Richards and Ron Wood play as if they are of one mind, Richards providing powerful leads while his partner captures some of the texture of the group's original recordings. Bassist Bill Wyman, still in the band at this phase, offers wit and an encyclopaedic grasp of rhythm & blues history, while drummer Charlie Watts adds control and swing. Mick Jagger prowls, climbs around the set, and delivers all the charismatic goods for adoring audiences, even touching the forbidden fruit again in a feverish performance of "Sympathy for the Devil". The DVD also includes a full Stones discography. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

| RRP He came from outer space to save the human race. Part documentary part music film part sci-fi The Nomi Song is a 'non-fiction film' or maybe even an oral history. It's not just the tale it's the telling. But it is also visual partly because Klaus himself was so visual someone who's main concern was putting forth an image of himself in everything he did - literally illustrated by the photos films videos and artworks that go with it and featuring many never before seen live performances. However there are also the images that the stories conjure up images that no actual picture could capture that emerge out of impressions memories and even exaggerations fermenting in somebody's brain for twenty years. It's like a novel with a whole cast of characters and supporting players - revealing themselves as much as (and sometimes more than) they do Klaus - with subplots background stories flashbacks and contradictions.
