Midnight Lace (Dir. David Miller 1960): The beautiful Kit Preston becomes disconcerted when she starts receiving crank calls claiming that her life is in jeopardy. Although She tells police about the messages her somewhat hysterical manner leaves them convinced that the danger is all in her imagination... or fakes in order to get attention from her neglectful husband. However two people know that the peril is very real indeed... That Touch Of Mink (Dir. Delbert Mann 1962): How much should a girl sacrifice to get the man of her dreams? That's the question facing an innocent country girl (Doris Day) who is swept into the whirlwind of the rich and famous when a Rolls Royce splashes her with mud. Profound apologies come courtesy of a romantic business tycoon (Cary Grant) who becomes enchanted with the girl's simple direct manner and open honest heart. But he's not interested in marriage...and she's never been interested in anything else. It's a delicious game of cat-and-mouse as working girl and wealthy bachelor pursue each other with hilarious results. The Ballad Of Josie (Dir. Andrew V. McLaglen 1967): Period comedy Western starring Doris Day as Josie Minick a spirited widow who after being acquitted for accidentally killing her drunken husband is forced to fend for herself in the harsh man's world of sheep and cattle farming.

  • The Pope Of Greenwich Village [1984]The Pope Of Greenwich Village | DVD | (06/05/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £12.99

Set among the Italian-American community of Manhattan and adapted by Vincent Patrick from his own novel, 1984's The Pope of Greenwich Village just about gets by on its charm. It stars Mickey Rourke as Charlie, a small-time grafter who is on the point of making his big move and breakaway. Unfortunately, the pull of family ties means that he's hampered by his cousin Paulie (Eric Roberts), an ambitious and excitable idiot who manages to cock up absolutely everything he turns his hand to, bringing down Charlie with him every time. After he gets the pair of them sacked from a restaurant, Paulie helps set up a safecracking deal with older hand Kenneth MacMillan. Trouble is, they’re robbing the local mafia boss. Rourke and Roberts' relationship is modelled closely on that of Harvey Keitel and Robert DeNiro in Scorcese's Mean Streets, only without quite the same harrowing consequences. This being the 1980s there's much De Niro-esque methodology, which generally consists of repeating lines at least twice ("Fix your tie! Fix your tie!"). The element of improv sees the film veer off course occasionally, while Darryl Hannah is her usual oddly semi-detached self in the role of Rourke's girlfriend. However, it's Roberts' performance as the exasperating and energetic Paulie which carries the film, with solid support from numerous Goodfellas and Sopranos regulars. On the DVD: The Pope of Greenwich Village arrives on disc in a decent enough but hardly pristine print. The sole extra is the original trailer, which means the only real benefit of acquiring this on DVD is storage convenience. --David Stubbs

  • Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Rust Never SleepsNeil Young and Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps | DVD | (03/08/2013) from £9.43   |  Saving you £-2.44 (N/A%)   |  RRP £6.99

Rust Never Sleeps its aphoristic title drawn from an intended advertising slogan was an album of new songs some of them recorded on Neil Young's 1978 concert tour. His strongest collection since Tonight's The Night its obvious antecedent was Bob Dylan's Bringing It All Back Home and as Dylan did Young divided his record into acoustic and electric sides while filling his songs with wildly imaginative imagery. The leadoff track ""My My Hey Hey (Out of the Blue)"" (repeated in an electric version at album's end as ""Hey. Hey. My My (Into the Black)"" with slightly altered lyrics) is the most concise and knowing description of the entertainment industry ever written; it was followed by ""Thrasher "" which describes Young's parallel artistic quest in an extended metaphor that also reflected the album's overall theme -- the inevitability of deterioration and the challenge of overcoming it. Young then spent the rest of the album demonstrating that his chief weapons against rusting were his imagination and his daring creating an archetypal album that encapsulated his many styles on a single disc with great songs -- in particualr the remarkable ""Powderfinger"" - unlike any he had written before. Now for the first time ever Sanctuary Records is proud to release the legendary concert movie Rust Never Sleep on DVD. Recorded at San Francisco's Cow Palace in October 1978 the movie documents one of the most remarkable concert performances ever put on film.
