French director JACQUES DEMY didn't just make movieshe created an entire cinematic world. Demy launched his glorious feature filmmaking career in the sixties, a decade of astonishing invention in his national cinema. He stood out from the crowd of his fellow New Wavers, however, by filtering his self-conscious formalism through deeply emotional storytelling. Fate and coincidence, doomed love, and storybook romance surface throughout his films, many of which are further united by the intersecting lives of characters who either appear or are referenced across titles. Demy's filmswhich range from musical to melodrama to fantasiaare triumphs of visual and sound design, camera work, and music, and they are galvanized by the great stars of French cinema at their centres, including ANOUK AIMÉE, CATHERINE DENEUVE, and JEANNE MOREAU. The works collected here, made from the sixties to the eighties, touch the heart and mind in equal measure. LOLA JACQUES DEMY's crystalline debut gave birth to the fictional universe in which so many of his characters would live, play, and love. It's among his most profoundly felt films, a tale of crisscrossing lives in Nantes (Demy's hometown) that floats on waves of longing and desire. Heading the film's ensemble is the enchanting ANOUK AIMÉE (8 1/2) as the title character, a cabaret chanteuse; she's awaiting the return of a long-lost lover and unwilling to entertain the adoration of another love-struck soul, the wanderer Roland (Le trou's MARC MICHEL). Humane, wistful, and witty, Lola is a testament to the resilience of the heartbroken. BAY OF ANGELS This precisely wrought, emotionally penetrating romantic drama from JACQUES DEMY, set largely in the casinos of Nice, is a visually lovely but darkly pragmatic investigation into love and obsession. A bottle-blonde JEANNE MOREAU (Jules and Jim) is at her blithe best as a gorgeous gambling addict, and CLAUDE MANN (Army of Shadows) is the bank clerk drawn into her risky world. Featuring a glittering score by MICHEL LEGRAND, Bay of Angels is among Demy's most somber works. THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG An angelically beautiful CATHERINE DENEUVE (Belle de jour) was launched into stardom by this glorious musical heart tugger from JACQUES DEMY. She plays an umbrella-shop owner's delicate daughter, glowing with first love for a handsome garage mechanic, played by NINO CASTELNUOVO (The English Patient). When the boy is shipped off to fight in Algeria, the two lovers must grow up quickly. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colors, and told entirely through the lilting songs of the great composer MICHEL LEGRAND, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time. THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT JACQUES DEMY followed up The Umbrellas of Cherbourg with another musical about missed connections and second chances, this one a more effervescent confection. Twins Delphine and Solange, a dance instructor and a music teacher (played by real-life sisters CATHERINE DENEUVE and FRANÇOISE DORLÉAC), dream of big-city life; when a fair comes through their quiet port town, so does the possibility of escape. With its jazzy MICHEL LEGRAND score, pastel paradise of costumes, and divine supporting cast (GEORGE CHAKIRIS, GROVER DALE, DANIELLE DARRIEUX, MICHEL PICCOLI, and GENE KELLY), The Young Girls of Rochefort is a tribute to Hollywood optimism from sixties French cinema's preeminent dreamer. DONKEY SKIN In this lovingly crafted, wildly quirky adaptation of a classic French fairy tale, JACQUES DEMY casts CATHERINE DENEUVE as a princess who must go into hiding as a scullery maid in order to fend off an unwanted marriage proposal from her own father, the king (Orpheus's JEAN MARAIS)! A topsy-turvy riches-to-rags fable featuring songs by MICHEL LEGRAND, Donkey Skin creates a tactile fantasy world that's perched on the border between the earnest and the satiric, and features DELPHINE SEYRIG (Last Year at Marienbad) in a delicious supporting role as a fashionable fairy godmother. UNE CHAMBRE EN VILLE In this musical melodrama set against the backdrop of a workers' strike in Nantes, DOMINIQUE SANDA (The Conformist) plays a young woman who wishes to leave her brutish fiancé (Contempt's MICHEL PICCOLI) for an earthy steelworker (The Valet's RICHARD BERRY), though he is engaged to another. Unbeknownst to the girl, the object of her affection boards with her no-nonsense baroness mother (The Earrings of Madame de . . .'s DANIELLE DARRIEUX). A late-career triumph from JACQUES DEMY, Une chambre en ville received nine César Award nominations and features a rich, operatic score by MICHEL COLOMBIER (Purple Rain). Features New 2K digital restorations of all six films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-rays of Lola and Bay of Angels and DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 surround soundtracks on the Blu-rays of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin, and Une chambre en ville Two documentaries by filmmaker Agnès Varda: The World of Jacques Demy (1995) and The Young Girls Turn 25 (1993) Four short films by director Jacques Demy: Les horizons morts (1951), Le sabotier du Val de Loire (1956), Ars (1959), and La luxure (1962) Jacques Demy A to Z, a new visual essay by film critic James Quandt Two archival interviews from French television with Demy and composer Michel Legrand, one on The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and the other on The Young Girls of Rochefort French television interview from 1962 with actor Jeanne Moreau on the set of Bay of Angels Once Upon a Time . . . Community hits an ingenious balance: it's both a top-notch sitcom about a gaggle of misfits at a community college and a satire on the very nature of sitcoms. Jeff (Joel McHale of The Soup), a fast-talking suspended lawyer seeking an authentic undergraduate degree, forms a Spanish study group for the sole purpose of wooing Britta (Gillian Jacobs, Choke), a former political activist trying to move into mainstream life--but to his dismay a handful of other students show up as well. As happens in sitcoms, they turn into an alternate family, including Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown), a Christian housewife; Abed (Danny Pudi), a business/film student with Asperger's Syndrome; Troy (Donald Glover), a former high school football star; Annie (Alison Brie, Mad Men), an overachieving ex-drug addict; and a former moist-towelette magnate (Chevy Chase, Saturday Night Live, Foul Play). Community's plots occasionally revolve around classes--most often abusive assignments from their volatile Spanish teacher, Señor Chang (Ken Jeong, The Hangover)--but more often the show veers into daffy social territory, such as female bathroom etiquette, excessive political correctness, sexually transmitted disease prevention, the true meaning of Christmas, bullies, and teacher-student affairs. The characters are delightful, the dialogue swift and clever, and the stories skillfully orchestrated. But the secret pleasure of Community is its sneaky commentary on sitcom mechanics, from the whole concept of an alternate family to the manipulative nature of will-they-won't-they sexual tension to any number of subtle but affectionate digs. The show's pop-culture awareness extends even further in two of the best episodes, one that turns a craving for chicken fingers into a GoodFellas-esque Mafia tale and another about a paintball competition that escalates into a quasi-apocalyptic action thriller. Fans of Arrested Development will enjoy the rich, layered humour and fans of How I Met Your Mother will take similar pleasure in the clever stories, but Community should appeal to anyone seeking smart, high-energy comedy. --Bret Fetzer

Shot in the UFA studios with a big movie star in the lead and all the special effects and production design resources any blockbuster of its time could wish for, FW Murnau's 1926 Faust represents a step up from his better-known Nosferatu. Oddly, Faust is a less familiar film than the vampire quickie and this release affords fans a chance to see what Murnau can do with an equally major fantasy story. Adapted neither from Marlowe's play Dr Faustus nor Goethe's verse drama, the script scrambles various elements of the legend and presents a Faust (Gosta Ekman) driven to summon the Devil by despair as a plague rages through the town, desperate to gain enough learning to help his neighbours. When this deal doesn't quite work out, because he is stoned by townsfolk who notice his sudden fear of the cross, Mephisto (Emil Jannings) offers Faust instead renewed youth and an opportunity to seduce a famously beautiful Italian noblewoman and then to return to his home village and get involved with the pure Gretchen (Camilla Horn). Like most versions of the story, it's episodic and some sections are stronger than others: the great stuff comes in the plague and initial deal sequences, though it picks up again for the tragic climax as Gretchen becomes the central figure and suffers horribly, freezing in the snows and burning at the stake. Jannings' devil, a gruesomely humorous slice of ham, is one of the great silent monster performances, reducing everyone else to a stick figure, and Murnau faces the challenge of topping his Nosferatu imagery by deploying a battalion of effects techniques to depict the many magical journeys, sudden appearances and transformations. On the DVD: Often seen in ragged, incomplete prints projected at the wrong speed, this is a decently restored version, running a full 115 minutes with a complete orchestral score. The original materials show some of the damage to be expected in a film of its vintage, but the transfer is excellent, displaying the imaginative art direction and camerawork to superb advantage. Aside from a nicely eerie menu, the sole extra is a full-length commentary originating in Australia: written by historian Peter Spooner but read by narrator Russell Cawthorne (who mispronounces the odd name). This provides an interesting wealth of background detail, such as Murnau's attempt to cast Hollywood's Lillian Gish as Gretchen, and delivers a balanced assessment of the film itself. --Kim Newman

In 1960 producer-director George Pal's The Time Machine reshaped HG Wells' thoughtful, ironic novel into a two-fisted action movie, but one that still appeals to children and adults immensely and deserves its classic status. Wells' themes of biological and social evolution are played down, but there is a surprisingly melancholy thread as Rod Taylor's Time Traveller keeps stopping off at future wars to find that human stupidity still persists. In the first week of 1900 a group of fussy Victorians gather in Taylor's chintzy, overstuffed parlour to hear him tell of his expedition to the future, where the world is divided between the surface-dwelling, childish, beautiful Eloi and the hideous, underground, cannibal Morlocks. Wells intended both factions to seem degenerate, the logical final evolution of the class system, but Pal has Taylor pull a Captain Kirk and side with the Eloi and teach them to fight against their oppressors. The time travel sequence remains a tour de force, with a shop window mannequin demonstrating a parade of fashions as the years fly by in seconds and charming but still-effective stop-motion effects. The future is a wonderfully coloured landscape with properly gruesome cave-dwelling monsters and a winning Eloi heroine in Yvette Mimieux. It may not be totally Wells, but it's a treat. On the DVD: The Time Machine arrives on disc in a lovely widescreen print which makes the film seem new all over again. The featurette "Time Machine: The Journey Back" combines some mild behind-the-scenes stuff about the film (and its star prop) with a moving mini-sequel reuniting stars Rod Taylor and Alan Young in a scene that actually addresses a plot point skipped over in the original. --Kim Newman
