A romantic comedy with an absurdist edge, Just a Kiss begins when Dag (Ron Eldard), a commercial director, sleeps with his best friend's girlfriend, Rebecca (Marley Shelton), a dancer, while she's touring in Europe. When their infidelity is revealed back home in New York City it sets off a cascade of people falling into bed together, including Dag's girlfriend Halley (Kyra Sedgwick), Rebecca's other lover Andre (Taye Diggs) and a waitress at a bowling alley (Marisa Tomei) with strange obsessions and loose morals. Just a Kiss slips to and fro in time and veers in and out of rotoscope animation, but even the live sequences have a cartoonish edge; it's hard to care about what happens to these caricatures, no matter how tight their pants or how skimpy their tank tops. Also featuring Patrick Breen (who wrote the screenplay) and Sarita Choudhury. --Bret Fetzer

But what seems like a shortcut to freedom soon turns into a journey of agonising, torturous pain beyond the human threshold. Pulled from their vehicle by a brutal group of armed, masked assailants, Carole and two of her colleagues are held captive within an isolated underground bunker. Initially assuming that the kidnapping is politically motivated, the truth is far more horrific than they could possibly imagine. Now Carole’s only mission is to survive. But it’s a living hell where staying alive is one thing, but staying in one piece is another. Completely shocking in its depiction of onscreen violence, Caged has already gained notoriety as a stylish, unforgettable and gruesomely relentless example of extreme cinema at its most terrifying.
Lola Versus captures the obsessions, confusions, and neuroses of contemporary urban middle class consciousness. Lola (Greta Gerwig) thinks her life is perfect--until her fiancé Luke (Joel Kinnaman) breaks up with her mere weeks before their wedding. What follows is a comic floundering, what might be a 21st-century update to 1970s "finding herself" movies like An Unmarried Woman, only the men are just as sensitive and self-absorbed as the women. Fortunately, the filmmakers keep a sense of perspective and humour about it all, and just as fortunately the movie is grounded in the unusual presence of its lead actress. Gerwig is strikingly beautiful, a fusion of a 1920s movie star and a Renaissance Madonna, but projects ordinariness. When juxtaposed with typical movie stars, she seems awkward and goofy, but when she's the centre of a movie, it all becomes suffused with her sweet approachability. The rest of the cast gets in tune, including Bill Pullman and Debra Winger as Lola's earnest, supportive parents and Hamish Linklater as Lola's best friend, Henry. The ending feels a bit tacked on, as if suddenly trying to harness the movie to a particular agenda, but the rest of Lola Versus enjoyably spins and wobbles in ways that resist easy labelling. --Bret Fetzer
Patrick Hamilton's trilogy is brought to life in this adaptation. A story of unrequited love set against the backdrop of the grimy streets and public houses of 1930s London revolving around The Midnight Bell a bar off the Euston Road; it follows the painful pursuit of love from three different perspectives: barman Bob who yearns for penniless street-walker Jenny; his colleague Ella torn between the attentions of an older wealthier man and her secret desire for Bob; and Jenny forced onto the streets through circumstances and now struggling to keep her head above water. This beautifully observed three-part series captures the milieu who stand at the side of the bar and pour out their passions: unrequited love ambition and disappointment.
