How to train your dragon is a magical tale of friendship and compassion. The film is set in the mythical island of Berk in Viking times where the inhabitants are constantly having to battle against indigenous dragons which prey on their herds of sheep.
The 3D computer animated fairy story's protagonist is Hiccup, the undersized, clumsy son of the Chief Viking, Stoick the Vast, himself a fearless warrior. To try to prove himself to his tribe, his father and Astrid (his love interest), he makes up his mind to become a dragon slayer and sets out to take on... a Night Fury; one of the most terrifying of all dragons.
Hiccup eventually manages to injure a Night Fury, called Toothless, but the good in him prevails and he can't bring himself to actually kill the aggressive creature. Instead, he befriends the dragon, mends his injured tail and helps him to fly again. There follows a series of misunderstandings, flight scenes, battle scenes and the revelation to Hiccup that his compassion towards the dragon was not a weakness but a strength. Even Astrid comes to admire Hiccup and there is a tender moment between the two of them which culminates with a little kiss (albeit on the cheek!).
In the final fight against the Red Death (a parasitic, cannibalistic evil dragon), Hiccup is badly injured and Toothless rescues him, saving his life. The story ends with Hiccup deemed a hero, Toothless being accepted as a friend by all, and the inhabitants of Berk waking up to the fact that they have misjudged the dragons and that they can be friendly animals after all.
The film was based on a novel by Cressida Cowell and was brought to life by DreamWorks Animation. It was directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois and the main characters' voiceovers are by Jay Baruchel as (Hiccup), Gerard Butler (Stoick the Vast) and Craig Ferguson (Gobber). The beautiful soundtrack was by John Powell.
How to Train Your Dragon is a bit scary in places but it is eminently suitable for children from the age of around 8 upwards. Delightful!

I sat to watch this film thinking it would be much the same as any other animation, run of the mill, ah nice, you know what I mean. How wrong was I? A Great family film from start to finish although some scenes may worry small children. The story writers offer tension, thrills, comedy and human passion. I would advise anyone to give the film a viewing, you won't be dissapointed. AND as for blu-ray.... wow.
What a fantastic film from start to finish it has you in its grasp . story line is brilliant and the special effcts are superb , a must see film for all the family to enjoy
