The Fortune (Blu-Ray) Blu Ray

| Blu Ray

This high-concept, big-budget screwball comedy directed by Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Wolf) stars Warren Beatty (Mickey One, Bonnie and Clyde) as a slick con man and Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Border) as his dim-witted sidekick trying to get their hands on the fortune of a hapless young heiress played by Stockard Channing (Grease, The West Wing). A commercial failure on its initial release, this buoyant and beautifully staged madcap comedy is ripe for rediscovery and reappraisal.

Mike Nicholls directs this drama set in 1920s America, following two hustlers (played by Jack Nicholson and Warren Beatty) as they try to get hold of an heiress' fortune. The Mann Act prevents the transportation of women across state lines for 'immoral' purposes, a situation that puts philandering Nicky (Beatty) in a fix with his upper-class girlfriend Freddy (Stockard Channing) as he tries to get them both to Los Angeles from New York. His solution is to have Freddy marry his friend Oscar (Nicholson), but problems are caused when both men find themselves becoming rivals for her affection. When the exasperated Freddy decides to leave her fortune to charity though, the two conmen plot to murder her and inherit the cash, but neither of them expected Freddy to be quite so difficult to kill.
