The Saga of Anatahan (1953) (Masters of Cinema) Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition Blu Ray

| Blu Ray

Josef von Sternberg the innovative director with an unmatched eye for detail and a reputation for his intensity brings to life this vulnerable tale of human trauma, survival and redemption. Set during the dying stages of World War II, The Saga of Anatahan tells the story of twelve Japanese seaman stranded on a forgotten island for seven years. Accompanied only by Keiko (Akemi Negishi), a young Japanese woman, all rationality and discipline are soon overcome by a struggle for power and control over Keiko s affections. Narrated by Sternberg himself, the director positions... himself as the story s unconscious viewpoint amidst his other trademark qualities: lush mise-en-scene, theatrical lighting and bleak yet poignant storytelling. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present the film on Blu-Ray for the first time in the UK in a special Dual Format edition. Japanese drama directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Akemi Negishi. While sailing in the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War a group of sailors are shipwrecked and stranded on the isolated island of Anatahan. The only people they find living on the island are Kusakabe (Tadashi Suganuma) and his common-law wife Keiko (Negishi). For seven long years the stranded sailors cling to the hope that their nation has won the war and man their makeshift positions even in their utter isolation. Over time the small community devolves into a fued for the favour of Keiko and supremacy in their tiny home, while unknown to them the sailor's comrades return home in defeat.
