Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear, Academy Award winner Alan Arkin, and Billy Crudup lead a celebrated cast in the most critically acclaimed caper of the year. An insurance agent (Greg Kinnear) is looking for a way to jump-start his business, reunite with his estranged wife (Lea Thompson), and escape the dismal midwestern weather. This self-proclaimed master of duplicity believes that salesmanship is all about selling a story-all he needs is a sucker willing to buy it. He hits pay dirt with a lonely retired farmer (Alan Arkin), who is sitting on something much bigger... than an insurance commission: a rare violin collecting dust in the corner of the farmhouse. His attempt to con the old man spins out of control, however, trapping him in a web of deceit and moral ambiguity. [show more]

Director Jill Sprecher's black comedy follows a down-on-his-luck insurance salesman who suddenly finds his life spiralling out of control. With his career on the slide and severe cash-flow problems, newly divorced salesman Mickey Prohaska (Greg Kinnear) is finding life tough in the wilds of rural Wisconsin. Fate seems to intervene when Mickey, whilst trying to sell a policy to eccentric retired farmer Gorvy Hauer (Alan Arkin), stumbles across a rare and valuable vintage violin in the old man's house. Seeing a chance to make a quick killing, Mickey sets about trying to prise the instrument from Gorvy's clutches, only to find his plans hijacked and his life in free fall when local ex-con Randy (Billy Crudup) gets wind of his scheme.
