Before he can become a warrior a man has to leave everything behind and go into the jungle guided only by his dreams. In that journey he has to discover completely alone, who he really is. Some get lost and never come back Karamakate, a warrior shaman and last of his tribe, transcends the worlds of men and seeks truth through their dreams. He alone knows how to find the mysterious and psychedelic Yakruna plant; for some it has life-saving properties, for others it is a commodity waiting to be exploited. Two scientists, in two different times with very different agendas enlist Karamakate on their individual quests in an epic adventure into the heart of the Colombian Amazon to find this mythical plant. This Oscar nominated film is seen through Karamakate's eyes and bears witness to the effects ofcolonialism, religion and the exploitation of rubber, that affect indigenous traditions and the environment to which they are inextricably linked.
Rainer Werner Fassbinder had been wanting to adapt Theodor Fontane's classic German novel Effi Briest ever since he first picked up a film camera. Originally intended to be his feature debut, the project took years to get off the ground and finally surfaced in 1974, in the process becoming his most expensive production to date as well as one of his most ambitious. Dubbed the German Madame Bovary', Effi Briest tells of a seventeen-year-old girl (played by Hanna Schygulla) who is married off by her parents to a wealthy Baron (Wolfgang Schenk) more than twice her age. Lonely and dissatisfied, she seeks solace in the companionship of her husband's friend, Major Crampas (Ulli Lommel). Beautifully recreating late nineteenth century Germany and gorgeously shot in black and white, Effi Briest also serves to showcase Schygulla, here giving her first star performance for Fassbinder.
Named after the apocryphal exclamation of Soviet security chief Lavrentiy Beria as he rushed to Stalin's deathbed, this blackly funny, deliriously immersive satire distils the anticipation and anxiety in the Moscow air, as the Soviet despot lay dying. Late winter 1953. The lives of nearly half the planet are in Stalin's hands. A military surgeon, General Yuri Georgievich Klensky (Yuri Tsurilo), finds himself a target of the Doctors' Plot : the anti-Semitic conspiracy accusing Jewish doctors in Moscow of planning to assassinate the Soviet elite. Pursued, abused, and marked for the gulags, Yuri is chased and dragged through a Stalinist Soviet nightmare. His desperate, jolting journey encapsulates the madness of the era. Directed by Aleksei German (Hard to Be a God), Khrustalyov, My Car! proved wildly provocative when it was screened at the 1998 Cannes film festival, despite being championed as the best film of the festival by the president of the Cannes jury that year, Martin Scorsese. A one-of-a-kind collision of nightmare and realism, German's film is presented here with a wealth of illuminating extras. Heralded as the greatest film ever made on release winning an Oscar in 1949 and topping the Sight and Sound film poll in 1952 De Sica's seminal work of Italian neorealism has had an impact on cinema worldwide from release to the present day with filmmakers such as Satyajit Ray and Ken Loach claiming the film as a direct influence on their own. His wife pawns all the family linen to redeem the already pawned bicycle and for Antonio salvation has come until the bicycle is stolen. Antonio and his son take to the streets in a desperate search to find the bicycle. Collection of five films written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. 'Reservoir Dogs' (1992) is set during the aftermath of a robbery which has gone violently wrong. Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Tim Roth and Steve Buscemi are amongst the stars making up the team of robbers, Mr White, Mr Blonde, Mr Orange and Mr Pink, who meet at a warehouse after the failed heist and attempt to work out who is to blame. In 'Jackie Brown' (1997) air stewardess Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) smuggles money on the side for gunrunner Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson). When she is caught with $50,000 and a consignment of cocaine, she makes a deal with Ordell: if convicted, she will not shop him as long as he pays her $100,000. Meanwhile Jackie also makes a deal with the cops, promising to help convict Ordell, and enlists the help of bail bond man Max Cherry (Robert Forster) in a daring attempt to outwit both the police and Ordell. 'Pulp Fiction' (1994) melds three dime-store stories set in lowlife LA into one cohesive thriller. Butch (Bruce Willis) is an over-the-hill boxer paid to take a fall, who instead does a runner with mobster Merselius (Ving Rhames)'s money. Meanwhile, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winfield (Jackson) are two hitmen who aren't having the easiest of mornings, and Pumpkin and Honey Bunny (Roth and Amanda Plummer) are two would-be bank robbers who are planning a heist in a restaurant. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 1' (2003), Uma Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When she decides to get married and leave the outfit her boss, Bill (David Carradine), is not a happy man and gets her former colleagues to show up at the wedding; leaving behind a blood bath and The Bride shot in the head. Four years later, The Bride sets out on a journey of revenge. In 'Kill Bill: Volume 2' (2004), having dispensed with some of her former colleagues, The Bride (Thurman) resumes her quest for justice. She now has two remaining foes on her 'Death List', Budd (Madsen) and Elle Driver (Daryl Hannah) - before she moves on to her ultimate goal - to kill Bill (Carradine).
While "rock musical" remains a phrase used by sadistic parents to give their offspring nightmares the genre does occasionally throw up the odd gem, Purple Rain being perhaps the shiniest example. Given the theatricality of Prince's stage shows, it was only a matter of time before the diminutive pop potentate found himself a big-screen vehicle but few could have predicted that Purple Rain would become nothing less than a cultural phenomenon. The story, co-written by one-time Starsky & Hutch scripter William Blinn, may be a somewhat hackneyed tale with His Purpleness overcoming a troubled background and musical rival Morris Day to achieve his dreams of rock stardom. However, the cast, which also includes Prince protegée Appollonia, rises above the clichés to hand in a set of performances which, while never likely to trouble the Oscars, prove that all concerned can at least play a rough approximation of themselves with minimal difficulty. What really helped push the film's box-office receipts through the roof, however, was its soundtrack featuring a clutch of hit singles--notably "When Doves Cry"--and which cemented our pint-sized hero's position as one of the globe's premiere performing artists. Sadly, subsequent attempts to re-bottle this particular brand of lightning with Under a Cherry Moon and Graffiti Moon would prove substantially less successful but Purple Rain still looks--and, more importantly sounds--rarely less than funktastic. --Clark Collis

Dreamlike and nightmarishly surreal, Vertigo is Hitchcock's most personal film because it confronts many of the convoluted psychological issues that haunted and fascinated the director. The psychological complexity and the stark truthfulness of their rampant emotions keeps these strangely obsessive characters alive on screen, and Hitchcock understood better than most their barely repressed sexual compulsions, their fascination with death and their almost overwhelming desire for transcendent love. James Stewart finds profound and disturbing new depths in his psyche as Scotty, the tortured acrophobic detective on the trail of a suicidal woman apparently possessed by the ghost of someone long dead. Kim Novak is the classical Hitchcockian blonde whose icy exterior conceals a churning, volcanic emotional core. The agonised romance of Bernard Herrmann's score accompanies the two actors as a third and vitally important character, moving the film along to its culmination in an ecstasy of Wagnerian tragedy. Of course Hitch lavished especial care on every aspect of the production, from designer Edith Head's costumes (he, like Scotty, was most insistent on the grey dress), to the specific colour scheme of each location, to the famous reverse zoom "Vertigo" effect (much imitated, never bettered). The result is Hitch's greatest work and an undisputed landmark of cinema history. On the DVD: This disc presents the superb restored print of this film in a wonderful widescreen (1.85:1) anamorphic transfer, with remastered Dolby digital soundtrack. There's a half-hour documentary made in 1996 about the painstaking two-year restoration process, plus an informative commentary from the restorers Robert Harris and James Katz, who are joined by original producer Herbert Coleman. There are also text features on the production, cast and crew, plus a trailer for the theatrical release of the restoration. This is an undeniably essential requirement for every DVD collection. --Mark Walker
Wonders of the Solar System Review The latest example of just how much a terrific documentary series can benefit from the Blu-ray format, Wonders Of The Solar System is a fascinating six-part series that simply looks stunning in high definition. Presented by Professor Brian Cox, the series takes time to investigate the solar system around us, and the many natural beauties contained within it. Across the episodes, Cox covers the likes of planets themselves, the rings of Saturn, the question of whether were alone in the universe, and the sun itself. What lifts Wonders Of The Solar System above the many shows that have tackled the subject before, however, are two factors. Firstly, its Cox himself, an enthused and interesting host, who explains things well and really helps make accessible the material. Secondly, its the utterly stunning visuals. The BBC has mixed in CGI along with images sent directly from space to quite breathtaking effect. And this, inevitably, is where the Blu-ray kicks in. Wonders Of The Solar System simply looks wonderful in high definition, with the visuals coming across terrifically well. On DVD, this all looked very impressive. Here, its simply brilliant, and the end result is a series that can sit alongside Planet Earth as an example of just what Blu-ray can do for material of this quality and ilk. --Jon Foster
