Balto | DVD | (02/02/2015)
from £5.30
| Saving you £4.69 (88.49%)
| RRP Buried like a bone in a snowdrift, Balto never achieved the theatrical success it should have, but it's worth digging up. The film is structured on the true tale of a lead sled dog, Balto, that brought a diphtheria antitoxin to the small town of Nome, Alaska. The film balances comedy, villainy and drama very well and the voice work is above average. This is safe family viewing, as even the villain's comeuppance manages a civilised resolution. --Keith Simanton, Amazon.com
The Lion King | Blu Ray | (07/11/2011)
from £7.76
| Saving you £16.23 (209.15%)
| RRP Disney's 1994 animated feature, The Lion King, was a huge smash in cinemas and continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed stage production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is deposed by a jealous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the songs from Tim Rice and Elton John, accompanied by a colourful score, are more palatable than in many recent Disney features. --Tom Keogh

Roobarb And Custard - The Complete Roobarb And Custard | DVD | (16/06/2003)
from £34.48
| Saving you £-28.49 (N/A%)
| RRP Directed by Bob Godfrey, who was also jointly responsible for its jelly-wobbly animation, written by Grange Calveley and narrated by the tirelessly chipper Richard Briers, Roobarb and Custard was one of the very great five-minute animated cartoon series of the 1970s. This complete edition contains all its 30 episodes. First broadcast in 1974, squeezed in just before the early evening news on the BBC, it was ostensibly aimed at schoolchildren. However, there's much for adults to enjoy in these episodes beyond the obvious nostalgia value. Roobarb is the breathlessly optimistic hound determined to reshape the universe according to his existential whims but who, like many dogs, is perpetually apt to bark up the wrong tree. Daily he tries to liven up the garden he inhabits, be it putting on a clown show on a rainy day or reinventing the day Thursday as Thorsday, thereby invoking the anger of the Norse Gods. All his efforts end in catastrophe, provoking the guffaws of the smug and cynical cat Custard and twittery snickers of the Greek chorus of birds in the trees. Deep truths about hubris and folly are revealed in these episodes. The makers of these cartoons, who clearly had a very good time working on them, see no reason not to avail themselves of all the surreal possibilities of animation, or to indulge in groan-inducing puns for that matter. From the cheesy soundtrack to the lateral flights of associative fancy, this is wonderful, timeless stuff that should give paws for thought for those who pooh-pooh 1970s cartoon canine capers. On the DVD: The Complete Roobarb and Custard has one extra feature--an interactive game in which you are invited to foil Custard by clicking a button to effect a Roobarb disguise. Adults may struggle to comprehend the rules, but they should present no problem to the more computer-adept under-10s. --David Stubbs

E.T The Extra-Terrestrial (Blu-ray + Digital Copy) | Blu Ray | (22/10/2012)
from £18.60
| Saving you £6.39 (34.35%)
| RRP This 20th Anniversary edition of E.T. introduces the warmth and sense of magic of Steven Spielberg's much-loved movie to a whole new generation. And it is the youngsters at whom this new version has been aimed, with the film being given a Star Wars-style make-over in the hope that it will appeal to a generation weaned on digital effects. Thus, ET now has a souped-up space ship and the pursuing FBI agents are more politically correct, carrying walkie-talkies in place of guns. They've even given ET himself a CGI face-lift, digitally replacing the beloved puppet in certain scenes. But this is no Apocalypse Now Redux. The re-edited scenes are small and insignificant to the plot: the only additional footage of any note is ET taking a bath and demonstrating that he can breathe underwater, which is amusing but irrelevant. The surprise is that the deleted scene with Harrison Ford playing Elliot's school Principal has still not made it to the new version. Despite such grumbles, E.T. is still the joyful experience it was 20 years ago, only this time grown-ups can follow the story through an added glow of nostalgia, as they fondly remember just how great BMXs were! --Nikki Disney On the DVD: E.T.--20th Anniversary Edition has the revised version of the movie (but not the original cut) on Disc One, presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and with a choice of gloriously remastered Dolby 5.1 or DTS sound options. The major beneficiary of this new presentation is John Williams' outstanding music score, which uniquely can also be played along with the film in the live version from the LA Shrine Auditorium 2002 premiere. A documentary about Williams conducting this extraordinary performance and a feature on his original scoring sessions are the best extra features on Disc Two. Other documentaries cover the "Evolution and Creation of ET"; a "Reunion" of the principal cast and crew with some fun behind-the-scenes footage; a piece on the planets of the Solar System narrated by ET himself (!); a photo gallery; trailers, and DVD-ROM extras. There's no director's commentary, but Spielberg does briefly introduce the movie on Disc One. --Mark Walker
