Raymond Briggs' The Snowman / Father Christmas | DVD | (06/11/2006)
from £17.88
| Saving you £2.11 (11.80%)
| RRP Two Raymond Briggs' animated classics, The Snowman and Father Christmas are here sensibly paired for maximum yuletide delight. Based on Briggs's classic children's book and crafted in a coloured-pencils-on-paper look, like fluffy, hand-drawn illustrations, The Snowman is a gentle fable of friendship and the power of imagination. It's the story of a small boy whose lovingly constructed snowman comes to life and takes him flying over the white-blanketed landscapes, in a beautiful rotoscoped (traced) sequence based on live-action flying footage. Part of the charm of the film is the gentle, everyday quality of its fantasy adventures: the snowman is invited in to try on clothes and play with the Christmas decorations, then plays host to the boy at a party in the woods, at which his snowy relatives do country dances. --David Chute In Father Christmas, an irreverent Santa breaks from tradition in many ways. He has no Mrs, owns only four reindeer and decides to convert his sleigh into an airborne motor home for a pre-Christmas holiday. He finds France too snooty, Scotland too cold and Las Vegas just right. Tanned and rested, he returns to the North Pole in time to sort through the mail, pack up the toys and hit the skies. He also narrates his own story (splendidly voiced by Los Angeles stage actor William Dennis Hunt), but fans of the 1973 book will find the animated version far less cranky than the original. Although the book was aimed at children between the ages of 4-8, this may have a wider appeal, depending on how you feel about the children seeing Santa gambling at the casino tables, dreaming of bikini-clad babes and suffering a bout of diarrhoea. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Puss In Boots | Blu Ray | (01/06/2015)
from £11.49
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP In this fractured fairy tale, Jack and Jill have the magic beans and Humpty Dumpty, with the aid of Kitty Softpaws, convinces his old friend Puss in Boots to help him steal the beans so they can climb the beanstalk to get to the golden eggs. Never mind that Humpty Dumpty and Puss in Boots had a falling out years ago, or that Jack and Jill are completely preoccupied by their squabbling over whether or not to have a child--and regardless that Puss in Boots is a wanted cat who's sworn off his thieving ways, and Kitty Softpaws is a cat burglar who works alone. Comedy abounds in this film, not only in the twists and turns of some classic fairy tales gone awry, but with scenes that range from a litter-box dance fight between crowds of cats to Jack expressing his paternal instincts by strapping on a baby carrier filled with a piglet in a diaper, and, of course, Puss in Boots' crafty use of his famous sad eyes to get just what he wants. The animation is top-notch (especially in the mass cat scenes), the music is compelling, and the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris are solid. While considered by some to be a prequel of sorts to the four Shrek films, Puss in Boots is definitely a stand-alone spinoff. What the films do share is a common comedic interpretation of some well-known fairy-tale characters and knack for spinning a funny story that appeals to both kids and adults. While a heightened sense of peril and some extended fight scenes may prove a bit intense for the youngest and most sensitive audience members, Puss in Boots is generally appropriate for ages 7 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

from £N/A
| Saving you £N/A (N/A%)
| RRP A blend of live action and computer animation, Yogi Bear is a lighthearted comedy featuring everyone's favorite smarter-than-average bear, Yogi (Dan Aykroyd), and his pal Boo-Boo (Justin Timberlake). Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh) and his assistant Ranger Jones (T.J. Miller) are charged with keeping everything running smoothly in Jellystone Park, which basically translates into keeping Yogi's obsession with stealing people's picnic baskets under control and stocking the pamphlet stand. But when Mayor Brown (Andrew Daly) decides to close the park and rezone the land to allow widespread logging, Ranger Smith must find a way to make the park quickly turn a profit to stop the process and save the park from destruction. Documentary filmmaker Rachel (Anna Faris) happens to be in the park on a quest to film the unusual talking bear Yogi, so she and Ranger Smith team up and create a big centennial celebration that has the potential to save the park. Unfortunately, a crazy stunt by Yogi derails the celebration and destroys any chance of the park making a profit. The question is, was there sabotage involved and is there any other way to save the park? This film is packed full of crazy inventions, silly gags, high adventure, and slapstick comedy, and, while it's really just fanciful entertainment, it does leave viewers with the message that you can't fail if you never stop trying.
