Fun Size | DVD | (18/03/2013)
from £3.99
| Saving you £12.00 (300.75%)
| RRP The premise of Fun Size is simple: teen girl, Wren (Victoria Justice), hung up on the cute boy at school, Aaron (Thomas McDonell), plans to go to his Halloween party to make him notice her. Last-minute request from jaundiced mom (Chelsea Handler): "Oh and can you watch Albert tonight? Bye!" So Wren and her pal April (Jane Levy) reluctantly take little brother Albert (Jackson Nicoll) in his tiny Spiderman costume out on a night every kid in town is running around in a costume. What could go wrong? Teens and mature tweens will enjoy the predictable pickles the girls, and guys, get themselves into as Wren and April try to both comb their town for little lost Albert while also never losing sight of the evening's ultimate goal: to be noticed by Aaron. It's not giving too much away to say that everyone escapes the escapades intact, though not without illustrating several different flavours of A Parent's Worst Nightmare: Lost kid, lost kid getting caught up in committing a crime and possibly being kidnapped, teenagers taking a car ride with strangers--strangers who have no business being behind the wheel of anything etc. The performances by Justice and Levy are winning despite their characters' terrible judgement, and Handler and Nicoll appear to be having the time of their lives. Fun Size definitely delivers Halloween humour for savvy teens. --A.T. Hurley

Barbie As Rapunzel | DVD | (06/09/2010)
from £10.95
| Saving you £-0.96 (N/A%)
| RRP Barbie as Rapunzel is an 80-minute video that will thrill children aged three to eight, following on from the success of Barbie in the Nutcracker. Barbie may have started life as a doll in the 1950s, but these days she's also making her name as a computer-animated film star. In a modern twist on the classic fairy tale, Barbie stars as Rapunzel--a courageous and imaginative princess who is locked away in a tower by the evil witch Gothel. With help from her friends (Penelope the cute purple dragon and Hobie the rabbit) and through the power of her own creative energies, she paints her way out of the tower to find freedom, truth and love. The video is visually impressive with dark and light colours used effectively to emphasise good and evil, allowing Barbie to be surrounded by her favourite soft pinks and purples. The well-known actress Angelica Huston is memorable as the vocal talent behind the unbalanced and scary Gothel. Excellent sound effects greatly enhance the film and Dvorak's New World Symphony played by the London Symphony Orchestra makes a pleasant change from films' current dependence on pop hits. Hugo the mighty dragon, Otto the nasty ferret and the sword fight between the feuding kings will hold the attention of those brothers of Barbie fans who are less than enthusiastic about watching this film, but essentially this is a little girl's film and the outrageously pink castle, the magical fashion show before the masked ball and the fairytale wedding will make it a firm favourite for its intended audience. --Tracey Hogan.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea | DVD | (29/03/2004)
from £5.99
| Saving you £9.00 (150.25%)
| RRP The swashbuckler genre bumped into science fiction in 1954 for one of Hollywood's great entertainments, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The Jules Verne story of adventure under the sea was Walt Disney's magnificent debut into live-action films. A professor (Paul Lukas) seeks the truth about a legendary sea monster in the years just after the Civil War. When his ship is sunk, he, his aide (Peter Lorre), and a harpoon master (Kirk Douglas) survive to discover that the monster is actually a metal submarine run by Captain Nemo (James Mason). Along with the rollicking adventure, it's fun to see the future technology that Verne dreamed up in his novel, including diving equipment and sea farming. The film's physical prowess is anchored by the Nautilus, an impressive full-scale gothic submarine complete with red carpet and pipe organ. In the era of big sets, 20,000 Leagues set a precedent for films shot on the water and deservedly won Oscars for art direction and special effects. Lost in the inventiveness of the film and great set pieces including a giant squid attack are two great performances. Mason is the perfect Nemo, taut and private, clothed in dark fabric that counters the Technicolor dreamboat that is the beaming red-and-white-stripe-shirted Kirk Douglas as the heroic Ned Land. The film works as peerless family adventure nearly half a century later. --Doug Thomas
