This new DVD brings together two concert performances with Gardiner a leading Berlioz interpreter conducting his Orchestre Revolutionnaire et Romantique. This is a new and unique coupling of two fabulous live concerts! The Symphonie Fantastique is a glorious orchestral tour de force which is central to the repertoire of every major orchestra. It is performed here on original instruments in its original 1830's orchestration in the atmospheric old hall of the Paris Conservatoire where it was first heard. The other work is the first performance of the newly discovered Messe Solennelle. Written when Berlioz was just 20 years old it was thought lost until its rediscovery in 1992. The first performance of this large-scale Mass for 150 years was filmed in London's Westminster Cathedral and is a very special musical occasion. Gardiner's period-instrument orcehstra gives characteristically idiomatic performances of these seminal works (which are also linked thematically through Berlioz's extensive re-use of material from the Messe).

Filmed in New York City in 1986, ‘Big Fun in the Big Town’ chronicles the emerging cultural movement called “hip-hop”, through the lens of an upstart Dutch filmmaker named Bram Van Splunteren. Armed with nothing more than a camera crew and vague understanding of the English language, Van Splunteren’s fearless excursion into the world of American hip hop led him to the gritty landscapes of Harlem, South Bronx, and the Lower East Side during the peak years of the 1980s crack epidemic. Putting his own personal safety at risk, Van Splunteren’s travelled to remote locations in neighborhoods where no foreigners or outsiders were normally allowed. There he managed to capture the essence of that time and place, while also managing to attain interviews and footage with rap heavyweights and emerging artists many now refer to as legends. The amazing scenes contained herein will blow the minds of any self respecting fan of rap music; a 17 year old LL Cool J greeting Van Splunteren from the door step of his grandmother’s apartment (where he still lived), the Mystery Crew out of Chicago who happened to be trying to snag a meeting with Russell Simmons outside the small first offices of Def Jam on the same day Van Splunteren happened to be interviewing him, DMC freestyling to and unreleased beat on the cassette deck of his brand new and first Cadillac, a still skinny Biz Markie beatboxing for Roxanne Shante on stage – Van Splunteren managed to capture so many incredible moments in hip hop history and really encapsulated the era perfectly. Amazingly, the film that captured the New York rap scene during its most vital moments never received a proper debut in the city until almost 25 years after it premiered.. And now, Five Day Weekend has secured the rights to issue this documentary for the first time ever to American audiences in a physical format. Big Fun In The Big Town is a must own documentary for any true rap historian, and a window into a time and place many of us can now only learn about through study. Travel back to where it all began and relive the inspiring struggle of hip hop music all over again. Features interviews and appearances with: MC Shan, Grandmaster Flash, Roxanne Shante, Biz Markie, Doug E Fresh, Mr. Magic, Marley Marl, CBS Crew, Mystery Crew, Run DMC, The Last Poets, Schoolly D and many more.

Our tour of Scotland takes us from Edinburgh, with its castle, Scott monument and palace of Holyrood, to the Highlands and then to The Hebrides, recalling the journey undertaken by the young Mendelssohn. In 1829 Mendelssohn visited England and, after the summer season, travelled north to Scotland, accompanied by his friend Karl Klingemann. In Edinburgh he visited the Palace of Holyrood, recalling the tragic story of Mary, Queen of Scots, and the murder thereof her secretary David Rizzio. Further north he took the streamer to the island of Staffa, where he saw Fingal's Cave and in spite of sea-sickness immediately sketched the opening theme of his Hebrides Overture. It was not until 1842 that his Scottish Symphony was completed, a work inspired by memories of his visit to Scotland
Completed just a year before the end of the composer's life, Bach saw his great Latin Mass in B Minor (1749) as concluding his vast body of work. Indeed, combining new music with material from previous cantatas spanning over two decades, musicologist Philipp Spitta noted, "should all of Bach's compositions become lost, the Mass in B Minor alone would for all times give testimony of a man as if with the force of divine revelation". This performance is very much part of a living musical tradition, as the Neubeuern Choral Society was founded by conductor Enoch zu Guttenberg in 1967, developing a local century-old Bavarian musical culture into a choir of international repute. Together with the Orchester der Klangverwaltung and the five international vocal soloists these forces seem almost to fill the small church in which the performance is given. Perhaps inspired by the setting, this is a beautiful, and where necessary rousing, account, Guttenberg enthusiastically conducting even with one arm in a sling. The talented, comparatively youthful soloists complement each other well; tenor Deon van der Walt and soprano Anna Korondi are especially notable. On the DVD: The absence of texts either in subtitle form or the booklet is a serious drawback. There's nothing remotely approaching a special feature, but the anamorphically enhanced 16:9 picture is very strong compared to many older classical music transfers. The sound cleanly captures the church acoustic. --Gary S Dalkin
