  In August 2009 legendary rock drummer Ginger Baker (of Graham Bond Organisation Cream Blind faith Airforce Baker-Gurvitz Army et al) miraculously reached his 70th Birthday. In October he also published his long awaited autobiography Hellraiser' (pub: John Blake) a book that for various reasons has taken him over twenty-years to complete. To coincide with these two momentous events a gig with special friends' was held at London's Jazz Cafe on 4th November 2009. This CD & DVD commemorates this historic & prestigious event & invites you to share the music & atmosphere of the venue. Ginger demonstrates his musical fluidity & prowess with a range of numbers spanning the back catalogue of his phenomenal career. He is helped in this by guitarist/singer Chris Goss (Masters of Reality) bassist extraordinaire Jonas Helborg percussionist Dodoo Abass world renowned saxophonist Peter King along with Ginger's daughter Leda Baker (Rubella Ballet/various) on guitar/backing vocals. For the last two numbers Ginger is joined by his surprise' guest & very special' friend Steve Winwood in a moving reconciliation that sees them play two show-stopping Blind Faith numbers and re winds time to when they last played together in Ginger Bakers Airforce in 1970.

  Birds sing and all is well in the huge glass dome of the National Botanical Garden of Wales in this visual performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here we have fine, stylistically middle-of-the-road readings from the young and talented Julia Fischer and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. It's remarkable to discover that this is her first recording, so assured does she seem, and so at ease in front of the camera. But how do you add visual spice to a work that is so well known? Well, the answer here is two-fold. For a start, the soloist gets a new outfit for each season (though the poor old orchestra are dressed in what looks like Hessian sacking), and the lighting is done with sensitivity--"Winter" is most affectingly set in a darkened dome. Second, there is a neat "Director's Cut" option, featuring the same performance but with different visuals. While the camera returns frequently to the action inside the glass house, it's complemented by scenes of visual beauty (not always nature's own): dew on a spider's web, playful fountains, meadows of wild flowers. The effect is thoroughly pastoral, but was it a good idea to record this work complete with trickling water and a leitmotiv of tweeting birds? Perhaps not. However, if you can get round these distractions, the performance itself is eminently recommendable. On the DVD: The Four Seasons, as usual with Opus Arte DVDs, is generously filled with extras. As well as two complete performances of the work, there's a 13-minute interview with Julia Fischer (charming but relatively unenlightening) and "Favourite Seasons", a man in the street-type survey of the public's favourite times of year. Fischer adds her own comments to this but it's probably something that will pall after a single viewing. The surround sound recording is excellent and superbly balanced, and the visuals are a delight: sharp and in pristine colour. --Harriet Smith

  Founded in 1967, Tangerine Dream is the single most significant act in the history of electronic music. Their groundbreaking albums in the early seventies paved the way for a whole range of keyboard driven acts and they continue to influence the genre to this day. This DVD was filmed at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle on 25 October 1992 during the Rockoon tour. The concert film, directed by Michael Boydstun, features the live concert intercut with behind the scenes footage and incorporates the films and graphics used as backstage projections during the show to dramatic effect.   This Russian Fireworks instalment of the "Naxos Musical Journey" series focuses on the wide geographical and cultural diversity of a vast country, from winter forest scenes near St Petersburg to the holiday resort of Yalta on the Black Sea, complemented by music drawn from a range of Russian composers linking the musical history of their homeland. The film opens with the Procession of the Sardar by Ippolitov-Ivanov with pictures of lakes and mountains in Uzbeksitan. Lyadovs charming Russian Folksongs begins east of Moscow in Suzdal, in the 13th-century cathedral. Rubinsteins Dance of the Bayaderes No. 2 takes us to Yalta, the lake resort where Chekov recovered from tuberculosis. A Galop by Kabalevsky underscores pedestrians running up and down the Potemkin steps in Odessa; while Mussorgsky accompanies scenes of the rich farm land round Kiev, Uzbekistan and oases on the silk-road to Samarkand. Lyadovs Baba Yaga is set in woods round St Petersburg, evoking the witch of Russian folk lore, and Kilimora, set in the same location, depicts a snowy landscape. The Enchanted Lake shows the Valday Heights, where the Volga rises. All these pieces are well played by the Slovak Philharmonic, following one another with very short breaks. On the DVD: Russian Fireworks comes with travel notes as a guide to each location in the filming. There are also brief composer biographies, and trailers for more "Musical Journeys".
