The packaging labels this disc Mozart Requiem, but the actual programme on the DVD bears the title "Herbert Von Karajan Memorial Concert", a document of a concert given on July 16, 1999 in Salzburg Cathedral to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the death of the conductor. Mozart's unfinished Requiem, as completed by Süssmayr, is obviously the main work. We are told that other works were performed, but not what they were, the only additional pieces being two short arias for soprano, Betrachte dies mien Herz un Frage Mich, KV42 and Laudate Dominum, KV339 beautifully sung by Rachel Harnisch. In the Requiem Claudio Abbado summons a deeply atmospheric performance from the Berlin Philharmonic and Swedish Radio Choir, and equally expressive singing from his finely matched soloists. Bass Bryn Terfel is powerfully communicative, soprano Karita Mattila hauntingly resigned. If not as fiery as if Karajan himself were conducting, this is still a memorable and rewarding tribute. On the DVD: There is a wonderfully three-dimensional Dolby-Digital 5.1 sound mix which brings the Salzburg Cathedral ambience alive, and a stunningly detailed and clear anamorphically enhanced picture. Documentation is minimal; no texts, subtitles or information about either Von Karajan or Rachel Harnish is given. There is only one special feature, which is not documented on the disc: by default the disc offers a standard multi-camera view, but at a press of the "angle" button it switches to a second set of cameras focused entirely on Abbado. --Gary S. In 1990, Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan was just emerging from a long period in which drugs had taken their toll: the previous year's In Step album was the first he had made "clean", and the results were a marvel. But then, after sharing a stage with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and Eric Clapton, he boarded a helicopter to Chicago. It crashed and the career of one of the great blues guitarists was ended.Rewind to 1983 and here is Stevie Ray at the beginning of his fame, his first album with his backing band Double Trouble, Texas Flood, having just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The venue is the El Mocambo club in Toronto, a dark, smoky joint with a laid-back but appreciative clientele. Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon share the tiny stage. The guitarist, bedecked in trademark hat and alligator-skin boots, is pale of complexion, sweating from the heat and physical exertion, and physically much smaller than Shannon, who towers over him. But Vaughan dominates, as much by the magnetism of his flamboyant personality as his guitar playing. And what playing: by turns fiery, funky, then limpid and surprisingly graceful. Here is an authentic blues artist captured in the throes of living through his music. At this early stage in his career he was still very much in thrall to Jimi Hendrix (the flower-power shirt gives it away), as covers of "Voodoo Chile" and "Third Stone from the Sun" (the latter a Hendrix-inspired guitar-abuse session) indicate. The highlight of the show, however, is his rendition of "Texas Flood" which turns out to be an amazing essay on the art of blues guitar. This is a raw, intimate and spontaneous record of a one-off event. All fans of the blues will be grateful to those who had the foresight to capture it on film. On the DVD: The disc allows the viewer to chose a lyrics on/off option, as well as different audio mixes (Dolby Surround or Stereo). There's also a short interview with Double Trouble's Clayton and Shannon, recorded in 1999, in which they reveal that Stevie never bothered with a set list, and a biography, discography and timeline. --Mark Walker

  • Vivaldi: The Four Seasons [1996]Vivaldi: The Four Seasons | DVD | (30/09/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £14.99

Birds sing and all is well in the huge glass dome of the National Botanical Garden of Wales in this visual performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Here we have fine, stylistically middle-of-the-road readings from the young and talented Julia Fischer and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. It's remarkable to discover that this is her first recording, so assured does she seem, and so at ease in front of the camera. But how do you add visual spice to a work that is so well known? Well, the answer here is two-fold. For a start, the soloist gets a new outfit for each season (though the poor old orchestra are dressed in what looks like Hessian sacking), and the lighting is done with sensitivity--"Winter" is most affectingly set in a darkened dome. Second, there is a neat "Director's Cut" option, featuring the same performance but with different visuals. While the camera returns frequently to the action inside the glass house, it's complemented by scenes of visual beauty (not always nature's own): dew on a spider's web, playful fountains, meadows of wild flowers. The effect is thoroughly pastoral, but was it a good idea to record this work complete with trickling water and a leitmotiv of tweeting birds? Perhaps not. However, if you can get round these distractions, the performance itself is eminently recommendable. On the DVD: The Four Seasons, as usual with Opus Arte DVDs, is generously filled with extras. As well as two complete performances of the work, there's a 13-minute interview with Julia Fischer (charming but relatively unenlightening) and "Favourite Seasons", a man in the street-type survey of the public's favourite times of year. Fischer adds her own comments to this but it's probably something that will pall after a single viewing. The surround sound recording is excellent and superbly balanced, and the visuals are a delight: sharp and in pristine colour. --Harriet Smith
