Underground heavyweights The Jesus Lizard return to the stage and this DVD is from the first show of their reunion tour. The original band (David Yow, Duane Denison, David Wm. Sims, Mac McNeilly) was untouchable back in the '90s and are the exception that proves the rule when it comes to punk reunion shows/tours. Always an insanely tight live band, this show proves they still got it when it counts. Singer David Yow is the demented James Brown to the rest of the band's Famous Flames. Blood, sw...

The Hamburg Philhharmoni State Orchestra and Chorus of the Hamburg State Opera.
Sultry sopranos and contraltos brood in candle-lit churches or at the top of a shopping mall escalator; a shaven-headed tough menaces enemies with a knife, singing of vengeance and death in a terrifying counter-tenor rasp; a couple sing of fulfilment in the back of a limousine. Jonathan Keates remarks in his accompanying lecture that the heroes and heroines of Handel's opera are real people, whose passions transcend the baroque libretti they are singing; by taking them out of full-bottomed wigs and panniered frocks and putting them at large in contemporary London at night, this interesting documentary reminds us of the immediacy of these arias. This would not work, of course, were not the performances exemplary in their own right and presented with a driving urgency that takes us away from the pieties of the oratorio tradition and reminds us what a superb and popular man of the theatre Handel was. --Roz KaveneyOn the DVD: The DVD comes with the narration in English, French and German, and subtitles in those languages. The arias are also playable as audio only. --Roz Kaveney
Sylvan: Posthumous Silence - Live At Kampnagel
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of Weather Report the Zawinul estate isproud to release this live DVD document of the band‘s performance in Offenbach, Germany, on September 29th, 1978.The recording features arguably the most individual group ever to mix elements of jazz, rock and electronics and they‘re captured here at their absolute best. Led by two musical visionaries, pianist and keyboard player Joe Zawinul and tenor and soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter, the group was also unique in that it eschewed the then fashionable guitar. Also on board were flamboyant electric bassist Jaco Pastorius, a genuine innovator, and newly arrived drummer Peter Erskine a master technician brought into the group to add more of a jazz feel. Prior to this line up an additional percussionist had always been present but this auxiliary role was dropped to allow greater space in the music. Track listing: 1. Black Market2. Scarlet Woman3. John Del Carlo’s impressive singing and acting chops as the Don are given every boost by Otto Schenk’s hilarious staging and James Levine’s witty conducting. Leading this opera for the first time at the Met, the renowned maestro demonstrates that his gifts suit Donizetti as perfectly as Wagner. Mariusz Kwiecien and Matthew Polenzani scintillate as Malatesta and Ernesto. When Norina slaps Pasquale, the old man sees how deluded he has been to believe that the young beauty loves him. The San Francisco Chronicle paid homage to this turning point thus: “Netrebko captures the moment that gives the opera a heart it otherwise would lack”.
Glorious Bach is a simple, straightforward record of a concert at the Benedictine Abbey of Melk of three Bach works for the season of Advent. All of them are, in different ways, meditations on the imminent arrival of Christ, both as child and as Messiah, and on the role of Mary as his mother. Nikolaus Harnoncourt has this music in his bones and so do his impressive team of soloists and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir; the Concentus Musicus of Vienna by now play original-style instruments so smoothly that one has almost to remind oneself of how shocking the authenticity movement sounded a few short years ago. Ian Bostridge is especially fine in the extended tenor part of the less well-known piece Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland; Bostridge combines an absolute vocal purity with a fierce intelligence in his approach to the words--the advantage of the DVD is that it lets us see him and his fellow soloists thinking as well as singing. Christine Schafer is particularly fine in the Magnificat in D, in which Harnoncourt lets his orchestra rip, reminding us why this is such a popular festival piece. On the DVD: The DVD, presented in 16:9 visual ratio, has sumptuous Dolby Digital sound, subtitles in English, German, Italian, Spanish and French and no other frills whatsoever. --Roz Kaveney

Jacqueline Dr Pre was an artist with an exuberant personality and seemingly infinite talent who already in her youth was recognised as one of the finest cellists of the century. It is a tragedy that her career was cut short when she was 28 years old. She died in 1987 as the age of 42. This film directed by Christopher Nupen and now available on DVD for the first time contains previously unpublished footage that is at once inspiring and intimately revealing - you can see the musician her friends knew and how spontaneous and natural was her response to the music. The film also contains landmark performances of great music including an excerpt from her memorable performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto.
