  Father Ted was granted a full 10 episodes for its second series after the enormous success of the original six. Series 2, episodes 1 to 5, offers the first half of the season plus the bonus of the 1996 Christmas Special. The Craggy Island parochial house regulars go straight to "Hell" for the most unbearable caravan holiday. Here Graham Norton makes his first appearance as the excruciatingly enthusiastic Father Noel. Then in a leftover script from series one, "Think Fast, Father Ted" has them attempt to rig a raffle at which some Kraftwerk-inspired priests and the record "Ghost Town" are the only entertainment. Their payback is to be the patsies in a rigged "Song For Europe", offering their version of "My Lovely Horse". Ted, Dougal and Jack manage to ensnare the lives of one bishop each into their "Tentacles of Doom" when the Holy Stone of Clonrichert is blessed with an upgrade to holy status. There's not much holy going on when Father "Damo" appears to teach Dougal all manner of bad habits in "The Old Grey Whistle Theft". Finally "A Christmassy Ted" sees seven priests lost in Ireland's largest lingerie store and Father Tod Unctious trying to steal Ted's Golden Cleric Award with reference to Mission: Impossible. The second series' wonderful parallel universe more than equals that of the first. On the DVD: From an animated menu fashioned around Mrs Doyle, the only extra is a full-length commentary from co-writer Graham Linehan. As with the previous disc, he's constantly telling jokes and then retracting them along with offering fascinating insights into cameos and dancing auditions. Linehan promises to be more experimental in future commentaries. The picture is naturally in its original 4:3 broadcast ratio. --Paul Tonks

  The two-part conclusion to The Office bids farewell to David Brent and his long-suffering co-workers in a surprisingly poignant not to say dignified manner. Supposedly accompanied by the fly-on-the-wall documentary crew three years after his highly undignified exit from Slough-based paper merchants Wernham Hogg, the first part reveals Brent as a travelling salesman by day and D-list "celebrity" by night, enduring humiliating club appearances organised by his clueless manager. But Brent can't keep away from his old stamping-ground in Slough, especially with the imminent prospect of the annual Christmas party. As much to spite suave rival Neil as anything else, Brent is on an agonisingly painful hunt for a date to bring along. Back at Wernham Hogg, lovelorn Tim has to endure not only the officious behaviour of Gareth, now his manager, but also a cheerless existence bereft of Dawn, who is living in Florida with boorish fiancé Lee. Matters are brought to a head for all concerned--including Lee and Dawn, flown over specially for the occasion--when they finally gather in the office for the party. As ever the script is full of priceless one-liners (witness big Keith's chat-up spiel, as he promises "at least one orgasm" to any woman), and the show is peppered with those direct appeals to camera (Tim's weary "I don't believe he just said that" look, Brent's desperate self-justificatory "Eh?"), as well as achingly effective silences that simultaneously enhance the fly-on-the-wall conceit and heighten the comic effect. Without descending into the sentimental or the trite, somehow The Office closes for business on a genuinely heartwarming note. On the DVD: This single disc has good, if unexceptional, bonus features. There's a behind-the-scenes documentary in similar format to those on the previous releases, a commentary from Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais on Episode 2, a funny and deservedly self-congratulatory featurette on the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, the full video of David Brent's single "If You Don't Know Me By Now" plus a recording session for "Freelove Freeway" (with Noel Gallagher on backing vocals). --Mark Walker

  Caustic wit gets a full-body workout in this 1994 comedy (known as The Ref in the US), in which a cat burglar (Denis Leary) gets trapped in an affluent Connecticut neighbourhood and is forced to hold a bickering couple hostage on Christmas Eve, only to discover that their Yuletide spirit is anything but cheerful. Caroline (Judy Davis) and her husband, Lloyd (Kevin Spacey), have been at each other's throats for so long that they've developed domestic arguments into an art form, and the would-be kidnapper turns into a reluctant mediator, even after he's got the battling couple wound up in bungee cords. The situation grows even more complicated when the couple's smart-aleck son comes home from military school, but it's not the plot here that's a top priority. Instead it's the sheer pleasure of witnessing a three-way verbal jousting match, written with razor-sharp skill and delivered by actors who are perfect for their roles. The movie's got a dark edge, but it never gets too dark--you know that it's not going to slide into more seriously damaging territory, so you can sit back and enjoy the volleys of scathing insults and sarcasm the way you would a Bill Hicks performance. If that sounds like your idea of entertainment, Hostile Hostages will serve it up with style. --Jeff Shannon

  With its star's bottom looming large on the cover, erotic adventure All Ladies Do It is clearly the work of Italian director Tinto Brass. It is another tale of a young woman and her quest to fulfil her sexual desires, in this case Claudia Koll's Diane, who embarks on a series of casual affairs much to the interest of husband Paul who, assuming that her tales are merely the product of an active imagination, finds himself aroused by their content. In the meantime, Diane is increasing her circle of lovers before a trip to Venice threatens to bring her dual life crashing down. The plot is frankly secondary to Brass' appreciation of the female form (absolutely no opportunity is missed to focus on Koll's behind) and it all becomes a little ludicrous. The original Italian title ("Cosi fan tutte") is derived from Mozart's comic opera but, unlike the opera's convoluted sexual politics, here there is only a rather confused attempt at expressing a quasi-feminist message about female independence. All Ladies Do It is best viewed as a piece of glossy titillation and nothing more. On the DVD: Brass certainly knows how to make the best of a location and there are some exceptionally beautiful shots of Venice to be found among the carnal adventures. The extras include a filmography and photo gallery as well as a low quality but telling interview with the director, during which he expounds on a rather strange theory regarding women's bottoms and the fact that, unlike their faces, they cannot lie. --Phil Udell
