Magnificent goals a thrilling match and a trophy for Blues. That will be the memories of the estimated 45 000 fans who followed Birmingham City to Wembley for the Leyland DAF Cup Final in 1991. May 26th was an historic day for Blues fans as for the first time in the clubs long history a Blues captain Vince Overson climbed the steps at Wembley and held a cup aloft. The star of the show was a 6ft 4in giant from Kings Heath by the name of John Gayle. The former Wimbledon man scored two and set up the other goal in undoubtedly his best performance in a Blues shirt his winning goal now the stuff of legends. Having seen their two goal lead evaporate and with time running out Clarkson sent over a free-kick which Overson headed on for the giant Gayle who turned and hooked a marvelous drive behond the flailing Nixon. It was a moment of sheer inspiration and just six minutes later the referees whistle signalled Blues first trophy for 28 years. It was also fitting that this was a Birmingham side in more ways than one with eight of the 13 man squad heralding from the West Midlands.
The second instalment in Birmingham City''s sensational season as the Blues return to the top flight at the first time of asking. Tension-filled and never ever dull City had their fans on the edge of their seats for most of the second half of the season chasing Wolves at the top and keeping the chasing pack at bay. Of course it wouldn''t be the Blues if they didn''t do it the hard way. Defeat at home to Preston meant nothing less than victory at rivals Reading on the final day would guarantee them promotion. And the man who earned the points on the first day did it again Kevin Phillips the hero as City triumphed and booked their place back where they belong.
