Musicians have long proven to be a well of inspiration for film makers, and so it proves again with director Anton Corbjn’s telling of the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division, Control. Based on the book of the same name, the first of Control's many successes is to make prior knowledge of the subject matter unnecessary. And while music is an important part of the film, the movie ultimately focuses in on the relationship between Curtis and his wife, Deborah. It’s a moving and emotional rollercoaster, and one realised with exceptional skill and grace by Sam Riley and the ever-astonishing Samantha Morton in the lead acting roles. The former is someone very much to watch, the latter is surely long overdue an Oscar. Credit too must go to director Corbjn, though, who builds up Control with diligence and discipline. He shapes a musical biopic that distinguishes itself from its numerous contemporaries, and while it perhaps doesn’t spend enough time with the Joy Division side of the story, it’s a film that’s otherwise hard to fault. Control, ultimately, not only managed to sidestep many of the contrivances of the genre, but it also offers a raw, electric and emotional experience, and proved to be one of 2007’s finest films. Don’t miss it. --Jon Foster

  • Depeche Mode : The Videos '86-'98 - Deluxe EditionDepeche Mode : The Videos '86-'98 - Deluxe Edition | DVD | (25/11/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £13.99

The videos of Basildon synth-pop pioneers Depeche Mode are justly celebrated not only for charting the band's musical evolution but also their penchant for stylish visual imagery. This collection features all of the band's videos from 1986 to 1998. Of the 20 videos here, director Anton Corbijn was responsible for 18, including classics such as "Enjoy the Silence", "Strangelove" and "Personal Jesus", which means this is as much a profile of his work as Depeche Mode's. Much of Corbijn's material was shot in black and white, lending it an artful edge which captures some of the majesty of Mode's music. The non-Corbijn videos are Peter Care's for "Stripped", notable for its bleak imagery, and Clive Richardson's assured "A Question of Lust". The videos are presented chronologically and bookended by interviews with the band discussing the videos and the singles, making this a fantastic retrospective not only of Depeche Mode's visual side, but of their enduring musical legacy too. On the DVD: Depeche Mode: The Videos has a bonus disc featuring an extra hour-and-a-half of rare and exclusive material, including three insightful documentaries that centre around the albums Violator, Songs of Faith and Devotion and Ultra, and the US videos for "One Caress", "Strangelove 88", "Condemnation" and "But Not Tonight". All of this is good stuff and a valuable addition to the package. Both discs are pleasantly presented in a sturdy fold-out cardboard case, and recorded in Dolby stereo with a screen ratio of 4:3. The menus and screens are slickly presented and easy to use. --Paul Sullivan

  • Depeche Mode - One Night In Paris - Exciter Tour 2001 (Two Disc Set)Depeche Mode - One Night In Paris - Exciter Tour 2001 (Two Disc Set) | DVD | (27/05/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £15.99

Despite their 20-plus years in the music business One Night in Paris demonstrates that Depeche Mode are by no means dinosaurs of synth-infused rock. While they could have easily ended up on the retro tour conveyor belt, as many of their early-80s contemporaries have, they have always managed to remain relevant. Directed by long-time artistic collaborator Anton Corbijn the concert footage concisely captures the atmosphere of the show which was seen by over 1.5 millions fans in 2001. Though there is an obsessive focus on the half-naked Gahan and the "fallen-angel" Gore throughout, at various points the camera withdraws to expose a huge screen at the back of the stage. Combined with the angry stage lighting, the projection films (which include footage of a goldfish swimming in a tank for "In Your Room") provide an added epic feel. Predominantly made up of songs from Exciter, the track-listing also includes old favourites such as "Enjoy the Silence" and "Personal Jesus". On the DVD: One Night in Paris' visual and audio material is of an excellent quality, which further enriches the strong live performances. The bonus material on the second disc (particularly the interviews with the band and tour crew) neatly complements the material on the first disc. However, the 50-minute commentary (which is more like a short-course on the practicalities of photography) by Corbijn is dull and over-indulgent. Watched independently of the concert footage, the stage projections also make lacklustre viewing. If the bonus material had been selected more sparingly all of the items could have been combined on one disc making a more succinct package. --John Galilee
