'What is or was the surfing lifestyle? The only answer I have is to watch Surfing Hollow Days. Maybe it's Mickey Dora surfing Hammonds or Kemp Aaberg arching at Rincon or Phil Edwards dazzling the Australians or Pat Curren riding Waimea or, simply, the twinkle in Paul Allen's eye as he tries putting on a 'rubber shirt'. Because whatever surfing meant in 1961, it still means today. Surfing is surfing.' - Film maker Bruce Brown

  • Surf Crazy [1959]Surf Crazy | DVD | (23/03/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The second film by the grandfather of surf films, Bruce Brown, Surf Crazy focuses on a surfing trip to Mexico in 1959, a time when surfing was so obscure that most of the Mexicans encountered along the Pacific shoreline had no idea why the crazy young Americans had long wooden boards strapped to the roof of their cars. The big problem with being a pioneer is that the subjects of Brown's film couldn't ask anyone where the good surfing spots were, so much of the film consists of the Americans riding rough unmarked roads in search of worthwhile waves. Brown appears on camera to explain that when this film was first shown in venues around California, he would appear onstage and narrate it. And a recording of his original narration, full of jokes both quirky and corny, accompanies the colour film footage in this version. The film itself sometimes shows its age, as scratches flicker past, but the colour is vibrant and the footage of surfers in an utterly pristine environment is often riveting. The second half of the film took Brown and his trusty camera to Hawaii, where surfers hit the waves at gorgeous Waimea Bay. Surf Crazy captures a beautiful golden era in the history of surfing, and even those who have never stepped on a board will find it very entertaining. --Robert J McNamara, Amazon.com

'By 1962, I'd spent five years full-time making surf films, one per year. I'd shoot during the fall and winter, edit during the spring and show the complete film during the summer. There was never enough time. I felt if I could take two years to make a film, maybe I could make something special.; ; Something special, however, would cost more money to produce than my other films had grossed. To allow myself the extra time and money, we took the best 90 minutes from my four previous films and m...

  • Barefoot Adventure [1960]Barefoot Adventure | DVD | (23/02/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

The grandfather of surf films, Bruce Brown, introduces Barefoot Adventure, his third film, by showing off the microphone he would use on stage while narrating when he screened the films in auditoriums around southern California in the early 1960s. He notes that a tape recording of his original narration couldn't be found in his attic, so he and his son have written a new narration for the film. That seems unfortunate at first, but the necessity of coming up with new commentary allows Brown to speak wistfully of surfing days gone by. Most of the film was shot in Hawaii in 1960, when the islands were already a magnet for tourists, but visitors were mostly content to take hula lessons and lounge around their hotels. Fanatics seeking the perfect waves of Hawaii were still a relative rarity, and Brown reminisces about travelling the islands, seeking out incredible new surfing spots in rattletrap cars that could be purchased for $45. The film shot by Brown, who would encase his camera in a watertight Plexiglas box, is often gorgeous, though the footage does show some scratches and other minor flaws that speak to its authenticity. While the camera never strays too far from showing surfers riding spectacular waves, there are some quirky comedic bits, generally playing on the dangers of going barefoot or the problems surfers faced living with virtually no money. This is a beautiful document of the earliest days of the surfing craze. --Robert J McNamara, Amazon.com

'It was the summer of 1958. I was a 20-year-old life guard in San Clemente, California, which to date is the only real job I’ve ever held. At nights I worked as a glorified janitor at Dale Velzy’s surf shop. Occasionally, while I swept up, Dale would show an 8mm surf film I'd made while stationed on a submarine in Hawaii. He charged 25 cents, and on a big night we'd rack in as much as six dollars. Dale, however, being one of surfing’s great characters, envisioned bigger and ...

  • Surfin' Shorts [1962]Surfin' Shorts | DVD | (23/07/2001) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

During the years I was making my regular surf films I also did a number of short films TV programs and commercials. 'The Wet Set' is a film I made for Hobie-MacGregor Sportswear. I think it was the first film done on surf-style fashion. After all these years the style which endures is the surfing of Billy Hamilton Herbie Fletcher Mickey Munoz and Bobby Patterson. Those guys could surf in raccoon coats and make it look stylish. 'America's Newest Sport' is a short film I made for Hobie. It was about his new skateboard and skateboard team. Hobie as he always did figured he could design something better. He came up with flexible trucks and clay wheels which sure beat the old steel ones. His skateboard team was a classic bunch of kids who performed state of the art maneuvers like riding a skateboard while covered by a trash can. 'The Endless Summer II' would have been a good title for this TV program I did with Bud Palmer. It includes the first-ever surf trip to Japan which I made in the summer of 1963 with Del Cannon and little Peter Johnson. The trip to Japan was made before Mike Hynson Robert August and I made our world trip to make The Endless Summer. When The Endless Summer was finished the Japan segment didn't seem to fit and was left out. This film includes interviews and surfing with the young hot-dogger Corkey Carroll and the best surfer in the world Phil Edwards. - Bruce Brown
