Meet Michael Ruppert a different kind of American. A former Los Angeles police officer turned independent reporter he predicted the current financial crisis in his self-published newsletter From the Wilderness at a time when most Wall Street and Washington analysts were still in denial. Sitting in a room that looks like a bunker Ruppert recounts his career as a radical thinker and spells out the crises he sees ahead. He draws upon the same news reports and data available to any Internet user but he applies a unique interpretation. Collapse also serves as a portrait of a loner. Over the years Ruppert has stood up for what he believes in despite fierce opposition. He candidly describes the sacrifices and motivators in his life. While other observers analyze details of the economic crisis Ruppert views it as symptomatic of nothing less than the collapse of industrial civilization itself.

The Concert for New York City took place at New York's Madison Square Gardens six weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. As presented here, with about five hours of musical performances and celebrity cameos, it was a frequently awkward affair: the traditional fatuous jollity of American show business ceremonies is not, perhaps, the ideal medium for articulating the feelings engendered by the kind of tragedy America had just suffered. It is often evident--and actually quite endearingly so--that the film and television stars who appear here feel somewhat foolish accepting applause while standing alongside the members of New York's Police and Fire departments who take the stage to offer brief tributes to fallen comrades (it would be nice, but naïve, to believe that September 11 caused our celebrity-obsessed culture to redraft its parameters of heroism). The performances captured here are mostly pretty good, though David Bowie's opening, with an eerie and affecting take on Paul Simon's "America", followed by a rumbustious "Heroes", sets a standard not subsequently matched. The short films by New York directors are also worth seeing, especially Kevin Smith's daringly funny New Jersey perspective (the concert's only other overt attempts at humour misfire woefully--especially the toe-curling George W Bush impersonator). However, the concert is principally of interest as a document of a moment in history, rather than as a musical artefact. All of what America felt, for better and for worse, in the immediate wake of September 11, is on view here: sorrow, defiance, pride and, as Richard Gere famously discovered when he suggested that perhaps there were more constructive responses than carpet-bombing Third World basket-cases, anger. On the DVD: The Concert for New York Cityhas a viewing option which screens out everything except the musical performances. Sound is available in Dolby 5.1 Surround and PCM Stereo. --Andrew Mueller

The Pool is the story of Venkatesh, a bus boy working at a hotel in Panjim, Goa, who sees from his perch in a mango tree a luxuriant garden and shimmering pool hidden behind a wall. In making whatever efforts he can to better himself, Venkatesh offers his services to the wealthy owner of the home. Not content to simply dream about a different life, Venkatesh is inquisitive about the home's inhabitants-indeed about the world around him-and his curiosity changes the shape of his future. Remarkably cogent and affecting, this is inspired storytelling distinctive for its ability to transmit a complete viewpoint in just a phrase or brief conversation. In the same vein as his latest documentary, Smith's creative acumen focuses on the gulf between the rich and poor, sharing its insights, observations, poignancy, and truth in a deceptively simple narrative. Working in Hindi with young actors and in a country obviously not his own, Smith has nevertheless created a superbly incisive portrait that will move and delight you. Special Features: A'Making Of' feature
Super Size Me (Dir. Morgan Spurlock 2004): Here's a documentary that needs absolutely no introduction. Why is America so fat? This is the question that Morgan Spurlock wanted to answer. He set out to interview experts in 20 US cities including Houston the fattest city in America whilst at the same time conducting his own personal experiment: eat nothing but McDonalds for 30 days straight. There were four rules: 1. No options: only eat what was available over the counter (including water!) 2. No 'supersizing' unless offered 3. No excuses: eat every item on the menu at least once 4. No quitting: eat three square meals a day from McDonalds The results shocked even the doctors who were monitoring his experiment... The winner of a host of international awards this unmissable documentary has really got the world talking and the junk food peddlers running scared! Wal-Mart (Dir. Robert Greenwald 2005): A look at the impact of the retail giant on local communities. This documentary takes the viewer on a deeply personal journey into the everyday lives of families struggling to fight Goliath. From a family business owner in the Midwest to a preacher in California from workers in Florida to a poet in Mexico dozens of film crews on three continents bring the intensely personal stories of an assault on families and American values. The Yes Men (Dir. Dan Ollman Sarah Price & Chris Smith 2003):A revelatory documentary directed by the team behind the Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner 'American Movie'. The Yes Men are a small group of prankster-activists indulging in such pranks as impersonating the World Trade Organisation on TV and at business conferences around the world. They even set up a website that mimics the WTO's and it's mistaken for the real thing! Soon they find themselves being invited to important functions as representatives of the WTO. Delighted to represent the organisation they wish to oppose the two protagonists set out to shock audiences with darkly comic satire...
