  Asano has a phenomenal memory. For him words take a unique form as he tastes smells and visualises them to the point where he can never forget a word once he has heard it. One day he decides to travel and arrives in Hong Kong where he soon encounters Kevin a man who soon becomes lover confidante and friend to Asano. However Kevin is an alcoholic and the relationship between the two becomes fraught as words seem to stand in the way of the pairs' future together.

  Triple bill of films produced by Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai. 'The Eagle Shooting Heroes' (1993) is an action comedy directed by Jeffrey Lau parodying the 'wuxia' genre of kung-fu films with a sprawling plot replete with big fight scenes ultra-complex love stories and goofy musical numbers. Major Hong Kong stars including Tony Leung Maggie Cheung Brigitte Lin Leslie Cheung and Jacky Cheung step up to the plate of self-parody with gusto in this crazy tale of treason treachery magic and martial arts. 'First Love - Litter On the Breeze' (1997) is a postmodern romance directed by Eric Kot which tells two interwining stories on the subject of first love interspersed with commentary by the director about how and why the film was made. In the first narrative strand Takeshi Kaneshiro stars as an emotionally damaged rubbish collector who befriends and falls in love with a teenage sleepwalker (Lee Wai-Wai). In the second a married grocer (Eric Kot) bumps into his first love (Karen Mok) a decade after jilting her at the altar an encounter that wreaks havoc on his domestic life. Christopher Doyle directs 'Away With Words' (1999) a drama about Asano (Tadanobu Asano) a man with mnemonic memory; for him words have tangible shapes tastes smells and colours and can never be forgotten once he has heard them. Travelling to Hong Kong he meets flamboyant bar owner Kevin (Kevin Sherlock) a man whose colourful past has been lost in a drink-fuddled haze and who cannot even remember the Cantonese name of the street where he lives. As the relationship between these two very different men unfolds it becomes clear that words only seem to stand in the way of their future together.
