Titles Comprise: 2012: The Final Prophecy: They foresaw the coming of Christianity predicted the rise of Hitler and told of the 2006 tsunami that devastated South East Asia. In just a few short years on December 12 2012 the Mayans predict that a natural disaster of untold proportions will destroy the earth and wipe out all mankind. As 2012 approaches the Mayan prophecies are getting world wide attention including Hollywood's take on the disaster. But is there any scientific validity to these prophesies or is the Maya code nothing more than a great idea for a movie? 2012: The Final Prophecy takes a look at this ancient prophecy. Stunning CGI and re-enactments provide a dramatic scientific explanation for what may or may not happen in the year 2012. Lost Book of Nostradamus: In 1994 Italian journalist Enza Massa was at the Italian National Library in Rome conducting research on old texts when she stumbled upon an unusual find in its stacks; a mysterious manuscript dating to 1629. On the inside of the book was the name of the author in indelible ink - Michel de Notredame - the prophet Nostradamus. This find was particularly remarkable the manuscript included over eighty watercolour illustrations that were painted by the master prophet himself. Contained in the pages of the book are cryptic bizarre images that some say are prophecies of our future. Letters symbolic objects banners candles crosses and even a burning tower are all included in the manuscript. Are these images visual manifestations of his quatrains which extend to the 21st century? How did this book come to be in the library? Why was this book hidden for over 400 years? And are these images so frightening that Nostradamus deliberately hid them? Life After People: This programme relies on experts' knowledge and understanding of history in order to predict the future helping to paint a picture of what Earth will look like in the days weeks months years and millennia after humans are gone. Looking farther into the future and using analyses based on the past we see how nature will reclaim the world we live in. Eventually glass buildings topple stone buildings crumble successive freezing and thawing turn streets to rubble water rises subways flood and sewers crack. What animals will survive? What kind of plant species will survive? Will the seas be filled with fish? Will humans ever return? Will man begin the cycle again excavating our ruins and trying to imagine what life was like before? This programme uses feature film quality visual effects from ILM and top experts in the fields of engineering botany ecology biology geology climatology and archaeology to answer these questions. Humans won't be around forever and now we can see in detail for the very first time the world that will be left behind in... Life After People.

Just in case anyone was starting to think Series 8 of Friends was about nothing but Rachel, "The One with the Rumour" reveals the "We Hate Rachel" club that's been around some time: Ross started it in High School with a certain Mr Jennifer Aniston (an uncredited Brad Pitt). In a welcome change of focus, "The One with Monica's Boots" has Monica and Chandler arguing over finances while Phoebe and Ross argue over the attentions of Sting's wife Trudie Styler (cameoing as herself). Next in "The One with Ross' Step Forward" his girlfriend from Monica and Chandler's wedding turns out to want more from him than he'd planned. And getting back to Rachel, her hormones find her bouncing all over looking for a partner. "The One Where Joey Dates Rachel" is her surprise resolution. This is another exceptional turn behind the camera for Schwimmer, who relegates his on-screen time to teaching a respectable class, finally. Other highlights of this volume include Joey swearing he can eat a whole turkey, another screw-up boss at Chandler's office and everyone's addiction to the Ms Pacman arcade game. --Paul Tonks

  • Curse Of The Puppet Master [1998]Curse Of The Puppet Master | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £12.98   |  Saving you £-6.99 (-116.70%)   |  RRP £5.99

Andre Toulon's living puppets are back in Curse of the Puppet Master, this time in the possession of Dr. Magrew (George Peck), who runs a house of marvels and is experimenting to create the perfect being, without all the inner conflict and torment of humans. To do so, he recruits a talented young woodcarver named Tank (Josh Green). But Magrew's plans get complicated when his daughter (appealingly played by Emily Harrison) falls for the young man. Fans of the Puppet Master series will probably enjoy this sixth instalment. The three leads are well cast, the production design shows some imagination, and the script works--until the abrupt and nonsensical ending. The puppets also seem less animated than in previous films; nevertheless, they still manage to get their whacks in. Trivia factoid: director "Victoria Sloane" is one of several stage names used by David DeCoteau, who also directed instalments numbers three and seven in the series.--Geoff Miller, Amazon.com

Nine years is a long time for any group of Friends to stick so closely together, but somehow the gang are still as daftly charming as ever. After the birth of Emma, Rachel comes to terms with being a mother surprisingly well. It's how everyone else deals with it that makes things interesting. Joey's accidental proposal creates weird friction between him and Ross, who breaks his finger throwing the show's first ever punch. Monica becomes desperately broody and attempts all manner of convoluted ways of persuading Chandler (unfortunately he inadvertently bankrupts them in a move to Tulsa). Phoebe, on the other hand, occupies herself in the dating game, holding on to Mike (Paul Rudd) in the longest guest star relationship anyone's ever had. Other surprise guests this year include Freddie Prinze Jr as an overly sensitive nanny (in the 200th episode), Christina Applegate as another of Rachel's sisters and Jeff Goldblum playing himself on the set of another movie on which Joey is trying to get a break. As always the sparks occasionally fly between Rachel and Ross, while the others manage to strain their own relationships to the max. The real reason for watching now is the one-off kooky scenarios in which they--or rather Joey--get into. His endless dating finally sees him stuck for remembering if he's already slept with a girl; he botches an attempt at eyebrow waxing; and he manages to make Chandler think that Monica wants a breast enhancement. A 10th series and potential movie spin-off were announced well before the year was over, meaning six very rich actors will be supplying the fun for some time yet to come. --Paul Tonks

Sometimes a filmmaker's second movie gets labelled as a sophomore slump. David O Russell shreds that fate with Flirting with Disaster, an outrageous, free-spirited comedy about private people forced into public situations. Mel Coplin (Ben Stiller) finds the opportunity he's been waiting a lifetime for: an adoption agency rep (Téa Leoni) has located his birth parents and the agency will fly him to California if they can record the reunion. With wife Nancy (Patricia Arquette) and new son in tow, the neurotic Mel is compelled to discover his origins, despite the protests of his neurotic adoptive parents (a wonderful Mary Tyler Moore and George Segal). To give away the plot any more would be a crime, but as the title states, Mel is on a collision course of Oedipal proportions. Russell, who made incest an intriguing black-comedy topic in Spanking, is very liberal with sex, and permits dangerous situations. The two women along for the ride are not just bit players: Leoni (Deep Impact) keeps her high-energy comic routine flying, while the grounded Arquette looks after the baby, despite the mad wanderings of her husband. Stiller is a perfect comic foil.--Doug Thomas, Amazon.com

  • Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness [1972]Lord Peter Wimsey - Clouds Of Witness | DVD | (08/04/2002) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Based on the series of novels written by Dorothy L Sayers in the 1920s and 30s, Lord Peter Wimsey was dramatised for TV by the BBC between 1972-5. Ian Carmichael, veteran of British film comedy, played the genial, aristocratic sleuth; Glyn Houston was his manservant Bunter. The pair are similar to PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Bertie Wooster (whom Carmichael played in an earlier TV adaptation) though here the duo are equal in intelligence, breezing about the country together in Wimsey's Bentley and stumbling with morbid regularity upon baffling murder mysteries to test their wits. Those for whom this series forms hazy memories of childhood might be surprised at its somewhat stagy, lingering interior shots, the spartan paucity of music, the miserly attitude towards locations, especially foreign ones, and the rather genteel, leisurely pace of these programmes, besides which Inspector Morse seems like Quentin Tarantino in comparison. It seems that initially the BBC was reluctant to commission the series and ventured on production with a wary eye on the budget. The Britain depicted by Sayers is, by and large, populated by either the upper classes or heavily accented, rum-do-and-no-mistake lower orders, which some might find consoling. However, the acting is generally excellent and the murder mysteries are sophisticated parlour games, the televisual equivalent of a good, absorbing jigsaw puzzle. There were five feature-length adaptations in all. "Clouds of Witness" sees Wimsey investigate the death of his brother the Duke of Denver's fiancée. --David Stubbs
