Legendary and long sought-after, this live Led Zeppelin collection is nothing less than the rock music equivalent of the Holy Grail. Quite simply, this is what all the fuss was about. Given that they were the biggest band in the world, Zeppelin were notoriously camera-shy in their heyday. Their official filmic legacy until now has been just the fascinating but flawed The Song Remains the Same. While this new set presents some previously unseen footage from the same 1973 Madison Square Garden gigs, its real wonders lie in the earlier (1970) Royal Albert Hall footage and the later Earls Court (1975) and Knebworth (1979) concerts. Everything here looks and sounds new-minted, thanks to painstaking restoration and remastering of both audio and visual sources, a Herculean labour of love on the part of co-producer Dick Carruthers working hand-in-glove with Jimmy Page. Trawling through thousands of yards of previously unseen film and unheard tape recordings--some with missing visuals, some with missing audio--Page and Carruthers have chosen only the best possible footage available. They were also at pains to make the segments segue seamlessly so that the viewer is treated to what feels like a continuous concert--just sample the transition from a grainy Super 8 "Immigrant Song" (Sydney, 1972) to "Black Dog" at MSG. Highlights? It's not hyperbole to say that every powerhouse minute of this collection (some 230 minutes of concert footage plus another hour and a half of extra DVD material) is a rare musical and visual treat. But hearing Page's violin bow work on "Dazed and Confused" in DTS or Dolby 5.1 is an experience not soon forgotten. On the DVD: Led Zeppelin two-disc set presents all the footage in pristine 4:3 picture ratio (the Madison Square Garden footage is letterboxed) with Dolby 5.1, DTS or PCM Stereo sound options. Note that the audio is uncompressed for maximum ear-shattering enjoyment. The menu screens do not pop up beforehand, but have to be selected. It's well worth doing so. Enjoy the music first, then discover that even the menus have been painstakingly designed to provide still more unseen footage and unheard recordings (some screens don't cycle round, but present another song in its entirety). Extras include rare TV appearances, interviews and bootleg footage. --Mark Walker

Getting Away With It Live is an electric souvenir of James' last ever live performance (before their new 2002 line-up), recorded in their home city of Manchester. The energy which bounces between the exuberant audience and the band crackles from start to finish. Tim Booth's bad language, particularly during the infamous technical breakdown at the start of "Out to Get You" just adds to the explosive atmosphere of the gig. The footage of these problems luckily remains in the final cut, exposing a more human side to the band, and highlighting James' long-term forte as a live band through their impromptu rendition of "Johnny Yen". Despite special appearances by former band members Andy Diagram and Larry Gott, Booth steals the show through his unique vocal talent and his trademark dancing style (when he gyrates round the stage like a possessed pipe cleaner). Featuring a sensible mix of old and new tunes, the concert concludes with an encore of break-through tracks "Come Home" and "Sit Down". On the DVD: Getting Away With It Live is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1, and the sharp visual footage further enhance the excellent live show. Through the use of random transitions (short excerpts from the documentary), the DVD is fun and informative to navigate through, and the two bonus documentaries provide further added value. Discussion on the making of selected songs can be accessed at various points during the concert when the band's trademark flower logo appears in the top right-hand corner of the screen. As well as the promotional videos for three of their biggest hits from the 1990s ("Laid", "Say Something" and "She's a Star"); there's also a hidden section where the band discuss their nicknames. --John Galilee
Recorded at their 2000 Wembley dates, Familiar To Millions celebrates not just nearly a decade of dominance by the Oasis lads but also the fact that it is still actually possible to get them on the same stage at the same time. Moreover, while the band certainly had their troubles prior to arriving at the Twin Towers (not least Noel Gallagher's decision to stay at home for many European dates), this finds all concerned on blistering form with even the newer band members sounding like they were born to play with the monobrowed ones. The chosen set list also wisely skimps on selections from their recent work preferring instead to concentrate on the likes of "Cigarettes And Alcohol", "Wonderwall", "Supersonic", "Shakermaker", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Champagne Supernova" and a superb Noel-sung version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My". The actual concert footage itself, though, is the only the tip of the iceberg, with special features including a discography, graphics that were specially filmed for the dates, multicamera angles on Cigarettes & Alcohol and a documentary by Grant Gee, previously responsible for Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy documentary. The most entertaining aspect of this DVD by far, however, is a Gary Crowley-conducted pre-gig interview with the siblings in which ex-cokehead Noel gleefully admits that he can remember absolutely nothing whatsoever about recording (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. --Warren Wayans

Captured at the start of their January 2004 UK tour this film captures The White Stripes at their incendiary live best. This famous filming of Portishead's first-ever live gig in New York--along with the accompanying album--is now considered a modern classic. The concert itself is a wonder to behold, as Portishead (Geoff Barrows, Adrian Utley, Beth Gibbons, Andy Smith) smoke cigarettes, chew gum, scratch records and behave in a generally hip manner while around them the 30-piece New York philharmonic orchestra and a five-piece horn ensemble do their thing. The performance and subsequent recording of this gig has, in some cases, offered a preferred body of work to Portishead's studio based albums, proving that live gigs do not necessarily equal poor production values. From the haunting "All Mine" to the ever-popular "Glory Box" the energy from the band members and the welcome addition of a live orchestra adds a breathtaking edge to the well-known tunes. The camera adds to the magic of the concert, sweeping majestically across the action and the audience, helping to capture the slow, silky essence of this urbanized opulence. On the DVD: As well as re-EQ'ing all of the music, the band have provided extra musical snippets, footage from their world tour (which followed this concert), an exclusive acoustic version of "Wandering Star", all of their music videos and the cultish short film they made in 1994. The "road tour" section is quite dull, shot from a car racing around provincial England (Portishead, mainly). The music videos, by and large, are more interesting and artful, particularly the video for "Only You" which is undeniably beautiful. The parting shot is their short movie "To Kill A Dead Man" (directed, shot, acted and scored by the band), which is entertaining, despite the hefty disclaimer that precedes it. All in all this is a very comprehensive overview of one of the 90s' most revered bands and a worthy purchase even for those who have the original VHS edition.--Paul Sullivan

So, what's the story, then, behind Oasis' 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe? Did this brash salvo of rakish Mancunian rock 'n' roll egotism usher in the era of "laddism", the shock waves of which still reverberate around town centres in the form of Saturday night yob culture? Was this Britain's victorious reclaiming of the rock band throne, the crown having been stolen in a coup (arguably for the first time since Elvis Presley) by Yankee grunge imposters? Or were Oasis just second-hand Sex Pistols with a twist of Lennon? Six enthralling DVD hours later--promo videos, footage from Top Of The Pops, Naked City, multitudinous live venues etc and heaps of extended foul-mouthed chit-chat with shrewd label managers, cocky band members, loopy mates and Burt Bacharach--and the viewer may not reach any discernable conclusion. However, one's thinking cap is well and truly stretched in an exhaustively entertaining manner. Rich in anecdote--a nocturnal meeting with a spaced-out member of the Stone Roses on a tractor in Wales, ferrying bass amps across the River Fowey in Cornwall on a speed boat, Tony Carroll's "crap" drumming, Digsy's lasagne--and bulging with barnstorming rock tunes about roll-ups, booze, dole queues, fame and flatulent canines, Definitely Maybe the DVD definitely does the job. And snapper-decking singer Liam Gallagher? A twit sometimes but you have to admire anyone who can make a tambourine look like an offensive weapon. --Kevin Maidment

Live From The Royal Albert Hall The Killers release their first live DVD on November 9th 2009. Filmed at London’s Royal Albert Hall during two very special shows in July, the film highlights how, in five short years, the Las Vegas band has become one of the biggest and most exciting live bands in the world, with the showmanship to match their incredible catalogue of songs. This package also includes the band’s first and only live CD with 80 minutes of live performance, as well as a behind-the-scenes documentary. Rather than filming one of their massive UK arena shows earlier this year (the band sold out an incredible 150,000 tickets in just two hours of going on sale), The Killers chose to film at the Royal Albert Hall, a venue with which they fell in love when they played an exclusive launch show for their million-selling (UK) third album, Day & Age, last November. This beautiful and historic room, built by Queen Victoria in memory of her Prince Albert in 1871, now holds a special place for the band. As, indeed, does the venue hold the band in its heart – an image of The Killers is painted within its corridors in a graffiti installation alongside other previous artists to have famously played there, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Hendrix, Clapton, Sinatra and Pavarotti. The Killers – Live From The Royal Albert Hall features tracks from the band’s three studio albums, Hot Fuss (2004), Sam’s Town (2006) and Day & Age (2008) - including huge hit singles Human, Spaceman, When You Were Young, Read My Mind, Mr Brightside, Somebody Told Me and All These Things That I’ve Done - as well as rarer tracks including a cover of Joy Division’s Shadowplay and fan favourite Sweet Talk (from the 2007 collection of rarities, Sawdust). The Killers recently wrapped up a summer of festival headline shows in the UK and Europe – performances from which are included as Bonus Material in the Live From The Royal Albert Hall DVD - and are now on tour in the US, playing sold out shows at venues including LA’s Hollywood Bowl and Denver’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Huge headline shows in South America and South Africa will see the band touring up until Christmas.
Texas Paris is a visual record of some of the group's best tunes played live, along with the original promotional videos. Unlike most bands who are usually never even given one chance to make it big, Texas were lucky enough to be given multiple opportunities to become successful. Despite securing a Top 10 hit in 1989, with "I Don't Want a Lover" it wasn't until seven years later, riding on the crest of the Brit-pop phase that the group were to gain long-term popularity. The concert in Paris has added significance, because of the cult 1984 Wim Wenders film Paris, Texas a favourite film of both Sharleen and Johnny and the motivating factor for their choice of the band name. The concert footage is shot superbly well, and has real atmosphere--you feel that you're at the Palais de Bercy rather than at some characterless out-of-town arena in the southeast of England. The electricity of this recording is stirred up further by Spiteri's excellent rapport with the audience, and her amazing stage and vocal performances. The selection of songs and running order is well balanced, with the concert kicking off with their more up-tempo tunes such as "Black Eyed Boy", descending down a notch or two to their slower numbers ("Tired of Being Alone" and "So In Love With You") and then climaxing with favourites such as "Say What You Want". Although she fails to don the latex mask and the stick on side-burns, clad in leather Sharleen's live performance of "Inner Smile" is almost as good (and Elvis-like) as the infamous promotional video for this track. On the DVD: The disc is jam-packed with both the excellent concert footage and videos. Both the concert tracks and the promotional videos can be accessed individually or played together. For DVD-ROM users there are also two exclusive Texas screen-savers. Coming across a tad arrogant in such footage, the DVD also includes a previously unseen interview with Sharleen Spiteri, which covers issues ranging from the group's formation to their recent global success. There's also exclusive live film of Sharleen's acoustic performance at Madonna's February 2001 concert at Brixton Academy, London. --John Galilee
