West of Inverness (1939, b/w) is an eloquent film about the problems faced by a rural community. and the increasing role for the railway for provisions and goods. The Line to Skye (1973, colour) is another gem from Eddie McConnell. This film was widely shown in support of retaining the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh line.
Channel 4's history of the North British Locomotive Company of Springburn Glasgow. The film details the story of Neilson Reid Dubs & Co and Sharp Stewart which combined forces in 1903 to become the North British Locomotive Company. Diamonds Were Forever also includes steam action of many surviving locomotives around the world and in Britain including scenes of the legendary 1911-built wood burning engines of Paraguay a steam rally in Melbourne Australia and steam-condensing giants on the South African veldt. Jimmy Reid delves into the origins of its traditions as they are practised in different parts of Scotland. The first foot the clootie dumpling the fireballs of Stonehaven the torches of Comrie and the bonfire at Biggar are all seen as is Up-Helly-Aa Shetland's festival of Vikings and Guizers. With the help of fellow revellers Robin Hall Archie Roy and the Whistlebinkies the mysteries of Hogmanay are revealed and explained.
