The end of the Edo period: an era of political strife and human suffering. Aspiring author Momosuke sets out on a journey to collect 100 stories to make into a book. Right away he meets up with a trio of outlaws: Mataichi the Trickster Ogin the Puppeteer and Nagamimi the Bird Caller. As they travel the group encounters the most twisted and horrible parts of human nature. It is the task of this group to punish each person in a manner fitting their crimes-a gruesome undertaking to say the least... Thus the bells of the requiem are heard throughout the land... Momosuke is forced to rest at a stranger's house after suffering from exhaustion. There he is given a remedy . . . or is it a poison? The group then meets up with a trickster spirit disguised as a samurai. But nothing will prepare the group for what they experience at Katabira Crossroads - the corpse of Ogin! Momosuke visits his brother only to find a murder mystery underway; a man has been killed in a rare manner. Ogin then faces her mother's killer who has been dying and coming back to life over and over again terrorizing the local townspeople. After they are confronted by a formidable spectre the group is charged with finding a lost bride. But the situation is more complex than they first thought... and people are not who they seem!
Momosuke separated from the group searches for the others when he is suddenly attacked by rebels. Ogin finds him and advises he return to Edo. When she heads in another direction Momosuke follows her instead. Along the journey Momosuke comes across a clan that has been cursed by spirits causing horrible deaths. Mataichi just may have a trick up his sleeve to deal with the atrocities at the castle.
