Giggling and fidgeting, they drink their prescribed glass of ox blood. The startling, unreal image of high-society manners in the midst of gore and death pitches Jean Rollin's 1979 feature Fascination into a turn-of-the-century culture come unhinged. When a well-dressed rogue, fleeing from angry partners he double-crossed, takes refuge in a lavish, moat-protected mansion, servant girls Franca Mai and Brigitte Lahaie cajole, tease and seduce him into staying for their night-time soiree. "You have stumbled into Elizabeth and Eva's life, the universe of madness and death", mutters one of them as they await the cabal where he is the guest of honour. Shot on a starvation budget and populated with stiff performers, Rollin's direction is arch and at times sloppy and his story never more than an outline. It's the mix of dreamy and nightmarish imagery that gives Fascination its fascination: blonde Lahaie stalking victims with a scythe, the bourgeois blood cult swarming over a fresh victim like wild animals, alabaster faces streaked in blood. Lips of Blood tells of a young man who has visions of an old castle and a ghostly woman in white. Over time he becomes increasingly obsessed with her and she appears to him leading him to a dark gothic cemetery. She then gets him to open up a number of coffins which unleash a hoard of blood crazed female vampires who cause mayhem in Paris. What follows is a series of beautiful bloody and perverse vampiric set pieces that make Lips of Blood one of Rollin's most successful vampire films.

Spurred on by the popularity of sex scenes in his horror films Rollin began to experiment with a series of softcore sexploitation movies under the pseudonym of Michel Gentil. This is S&M-themed erotica with a Jean Rollin twist reminiscent of The Shiver of the Vampires (1971) and prerequisite to the iconic Demoniacs (1974).

Cult director Jean Rollin's first feature mixes existentialism and vampirism with the added ingredient of chaos. Originally made as a short it was expanded to a feature length with the dead cast inexplicably returning to life half-way through (having been killed off at the end of the original). That said 'Le Viol du Vampire' is a masterpiece of the bizarre mixing blood a naked woman in a convertable coffins and some fencing semi-naked nymphs in a fragmented melee. The films of French cult director Jean Rollin belong to a genre all their own, horror fantasies that plunge viewers into wild fantasy worlds out of time and place in which figures (usually nude women) wander a deserted landscape. In Requiem for a Vampire, two school girls in painted clown faces and goofy polka-dot garb shoot out of the back of a speeding car on a desolate country road. For 45 minutes, we follow the adventures of the braided young nymphs as they ditch the car, wipe off the clown white, and change into miniskirts, with nary a word spoken. They dreamily wander through a graveyard (where one falls into a freshly dug grave and is buried alive!) and into a castle, where they are suddenly set upon by cloaked figures and brutish henchmen and made the servants of a tired, sorry-looking vampire desperately attempting to perpetuate his race with fresh blood. The lyrical first half, with its often beautiful and bizarre imagery, gives way to an astonishingly brutal scene in which the henchman molest the women they have chained naked in their dungeon. The film bounces back and forth between surreal poetry and kinky decadence (which also includes scenes of sadomasochism and plenty of gratuitous nudity), but Jean Rollin's ethereal mood and fairy-tale imagery gives the largely wordless film an eerie beauty and the surreal logic of a waking dream. --Sean Axmaker
