From 1961 to 1991 this continent was is the battleground for a war between four competing and opposing interests: the Soviet Union which sought to extend its influence; the U.S. interesting in capturing Africa's natural resources; former European colonial empires; and young African's nations trying to defend their newly-won independence. Called on to help these new nations in their revolutionary struggle Cuba played a central yet little known role in supporting African national liberation.
