Never Say Never Again (Dir. Irvin Kershner 1983): Sean Connery is back for his final performance as super agent James Bond in this high-velocity action thriller from the director of 'The Empire Strikes Back'. In this remake of the 1965 spy classic Thunderball two atomic warheads are hijacked by the evil SPECTRE organization forcing agent 007 out of retirement and hurling him into an explosive pulse-pounding race to save the world from nuclear terrorists. Casino Royale (Dir. Val Guest 1967): Things are looking decidedly bleak for British Intelligence in both senses of the term. SMERSH has begun to sabotage global stability no less than 11 agents have been lost and to make matters worse our greatest secret agent 007 is languishing in stately retirement. M - together with the heads of the CIA and KGB - have only one hope: to bring Sir James Bond (David Niven) out of retirement and into the field. Finding himself pitched against an opposition of fiendish intensity - an array of female secret agents armed with explosive grouse; a baccarat-playing illusionist (Orson Welles) and a neurotic megalomaniac (Woody Allen) - Bond launches his brilliant plan... ""from now on all agents will be known as James Bond including the girls"".

True Grit: In 1970 John Wayne earned an Academy Award for his larger-than-life performance as the drunken uncouth and totally fearless one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn. The cantankerous Rooster is hired by a headstrong young girl (Kim Darby) to find the man who murdered her father and fled with the family savings. When Cogburn's employer insists on accompanying the old gunfighter sparks fly. And the situation goes from troubled to disastrous when the inexperienced but enthusiastic Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell) joins the party. Laughter and tears punctuate the wild action in this extraordinary Western which features performances by Robert Duvall and Strother Martin. The Sons Of Katie Elder: Katie Elder bore four sons. The day she is buried they all return home to Clearwater Texas to pay their last respects. John Wayne is the eldest and toughest son the gunslinger. Tom (Dean Martin) is good with a deck of cards and good with a gun when he has to be. Matt (Earl Holliman) is the quiet one - nobody ever called him yellow... twice. Bud (Michael Anderson Jr.) is the youngest. Any hope for respectability lies with him. Directed by Henry Hathaway (True Grit) an acknowledged master of the western the story has a dual theme; not only is this a he-mans story but it is also a drama of the maternal influence of Katie Elder movingly portrayed from beginning to conclusion. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance: Ranking with Stagecoach as one of the greatest of its genre 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' is the modern-day Western to beat all Westerns. John Ford whose very name is synonymous with Westerns directed the ideal cast. Jimmy Stewart plays the bungling but charming big-city lawyer determined to rid the fair village of Shinbone of its number one nuisance and Bad Man: Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). And as if all that weren't enough the biggest star that ever aimed a six-shooter plays the Man of the title: John Wayne. Super-sincere Stewart and rugged rancher Wayne also share the same love interest (Vera Miles). One gets the gunman but the other gets the gal...
Before WENTWORTH, BAD GIRLS and PRISONER: CELL BLOCK H there was WITHIN THESE WALLS! Hard-hitting and often controversial, Within These Walls gave an authentic portrayal of day-to-day prison life in the 1970s. Intense and emotional, the series reflected the shift in emphasis from punishment to rehabilitation as it focused on the trials of a newly appointed governor and her attempts to liberalise the regime of Stone Park, H.M. Prison for women. Starring Googie Withers as the principled and compassionate prison governor (followed in later series by Katharine Blake and Sarah Lawson), this landmark series showcased strong writing and direction and remains a high point of British television drama. Guests across all five series include Barbara Ewing, Colin Baker, Paul Darrow, Angharad Rees, Sorcha Cusack, Jill Gascoine, Lynda Bellingham, Gabrielle Lloyd, Gwen Taylor, Stephen Yardley, Cheryl Campbell, Joan Hickson, John Rhys-Davies, Michael Bryant, Angela Thorne, Martin Jarvis, Pamela Stephenson and Simon MacCorkindale.
Fine casting, rugged characters and authentic military detail make The Bridge at Remagen one of the best World War II action films of the 1960s. Based on actual incidents during the final Allied advance on Germany in March 1945, the story focuses on the US Army's exhausted 27th Armoured Infantry, assigned to seize the bridge at Remagen, on the Rhine river, to prevent 50,000 German troops from retreating to safety. Lt Hartman (George Segal) leads the mission, while a Nazi major (Robert Vaughn) defies orders by attempting to hold the bridge instead of blowing it up. With strong emphasis on war's harsher realities, the film's compelling characters illustrate the camaraderie of survivors and the heroism of mavericks in the thick of battle. Segal and Ben Gazzara effectively convey a hard-won friendship, and the film's dynamic action (filmed in Czechoslovakia and Italy) never overwhelms the story's emotional impact. This is highly recommended. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com
