The renowned German filmmaker Lutz Becker directed The Double Headed Eagle as a means of allowing Germans to understand and come to terms with the historical phenomenon that was Hitler. It is a dramatic documentary tracing the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party through the social chaos of the Weimar Republic. The programme shows how the Nazis provoked manipulated and exploited this chaos between 1918-1933. Their victims were the vast majority of the politically uncommitted democratic sections of society. The film highlights a disintegrating society and reveals parallels with contemporary social and political problems. By demonstrating these parallels Producer Puttnam's film makes Hitler's rise more understandable and in many ways more chilling.
