Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan) is a rich businessman with a modern outlook on life. For him family culture and values are of utmost importance. Kind-hearted and compassionate Mr. Sinha (nasir hussain) runs a textile mill in a city in India, and shares his profits by paying generous wages and bonuses to his grateful workers. But when he unexpectedly passes away, his son, Hiralal (Suresh Oberoi), takes over and changes everything in order to maximize profits. But in the deafening noise of violence and anarchy there is also a gentler but challenging voice which refuses to remain silent and let evil prevail. Such a voice is that of Prof. Prabhat Varma (Raj Babbar) a poet and a professor of Sanskrit who comes to Bombay and finds himself unwittingly drawn into the vortex of lawlessness and violence. In trying to raise his voice of protest he draws on himself the violent reaction of the under world gangs one of which tries to teach him a lesson by brutally raping his sister and killing his mother. Knowing about the inadequacy of law that seeks evidence as a precondition of justice Prabhat launches a one-man crusade against all evildoers - and in the process becomes an avenging angel destroying all those who perpetrate terrorism and death on peace loving citizens.
