From Director Thomas Balmès (Babies) “Happiness” won the Sundance cinematography award World Cinema Documentary 2014 A visually stunning and emotionally stirring documentary set in the tiny village of Laya nestled deep in the Himalayan mountainside in remote Bhutan (one of the last known parts of the world to be connected to electricity television or internet). “Happiness” tracks the bittersweet transition as an innocent simpler lifestyle slowly fades to the seduction of technology and ‘progress’. Told through the eyes of Peyangki; a captivating and dreamy nine year old boy who is sent by his mother to study at the local monastery because she cannot afford to raise all six of her children. We witness his seismic shift in awareness through a three day journey from the sweeping majestic scenery of Laya to the bustling buzzing capital of Thimpu with his uncle where Peyangki discovers televisions cars bright city lights and modern creature comforts for the very first time.
