Emerging from the primordial soup of glamour, gutter sleaze, and feverish creativity that was New York's 1960s underground culture, the Velvet Underground redefined music with its at once raw and exalted blend of experimentation and art-damaged rock and roll. In his kaleidoscopic documentary The Velvet Underground, TODD HAYNES (Velvet Goldmine) vividly evokes the band's incandescent world: the creative origins of the twin visionaries LOU REED and JOHN CALE, ANDY WARHOL's fabled Factory, and the explosive tension between pop and the avant-garde that propelled the group and ultimately consumed it. Never-before-seen performances, interviews, rare recordings, and mind-blowing transmissions from the era's avant-garde cinema scene come together in an ecstatic swirl of sound and image that is to the traditional music documentary what the Velvets were to rock: utterly revolutionary. Product Features New 4K digital master, approved by director Todd Haynes and cinematographer Ed Lachman, with Dolby Atmos soundtrack Audio commentary featuring Haynes and editors Affonso Gonçalves and Adam Kurnitz Outtakes of interviews shot for the film with musicians John Cale, Jonathan Richman, and Maureen Tucker; filmmaker Jonas Mekas; and actor Mary Woronov Conversation from 2021 among Haynes, Cale, and Tucker Complete versions of some of the avant-garde films excerpted in the movie, including Piero Heliczer's Venus in Furs (1965) Teaser English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing Optional annotated subtitle track that identifies the avant-garde films seen in the movie PLUS: A 2021 essay by critic Greil Marcus

  • Velvet Goldmine [1998]Velvet Goldmine | DVD | (07/06/2004) from £19.99   |  Saving you £-14.00 (N/A%)   |  RRP £5.99

Somewhat misleadingly described by many as a mock-biopic based on the life of David Bowie, Velvet Goldmine is so much more than that. Journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) who sets out to discover whatever happened to Ziggy Stardust-like Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), the famous bisexual glam star who crashed and burned spectacularly, but in the process helped Arthur awaken his own sexuality. It's an insane homage to 1970s glam rock in the UK as only American, who knew the movement from a distance, would make; it's a tribute to film director Nicolas Roeg's best work, particularly Performance and the Bowie-vehicle The Man Who Fell to Earth; it's a sci-fi movie about an alternative reality (the film's "present" is a 1984 that never existed and frustratingly never clearly explained); it's a queer Citizen Kane with lashings of eye-glitter, a complete mess, an absolute delight and a chance to see Ewan McGregor naked in case you didn't catch him in The Pillow Book as the Iggy Pop-like Curt Wild, Slade's lover/protégé.Director Todd Haynes, who made the incredibly spare Safe and a biopic about Karen Carpenter with Barbie dolls, crams in everything--including the kitchen sink, all the washing-up and half the larder--as if terrified he'll never get another chance to shoot even a commercial again. The pacing drags like catwalk-queen's glittery taffeta train at times, but then glorious swooping musical numbers and clever bits of allusive business arrive that will brighten the day of many a pop-fan and film-buff. Never anything less than ruthlessly inventive and demanding of patience and an open mind, it's one for connoisseurs. Viewers who prefer easy-viewing eye candy are well advised to stick with fluff like Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. --Leslie Felperin

  • Poison/Dottie Gets Spanked [1991]Poison/Dottie Gets Spanked | DVD | (14/05/2007) from £N/A   |  Saving you £N/A (N/A%)   |  RRP £19.99

Poison (1991): The compelling and imaginative debut feature from Oscar nominated writer/director Todd Haynes and winner of Grand Jury Prize at the 1991 Sundance Film Festival Poison intricately interweaves three provocative and very distinct stories. In 'Hero' a young boy goes missing after killing his abusive father and then flying out of the window of his suburban home. The 'Horror' segment takes the form of a 50's B Horror Movie. Scientist Dr. Graves has managed to isolate and distill the essence of the human sex drive into a serum. After drinking it he transforms into a lethally infectious grotesque mutant. 'Homo' portrays the cruel obsessive love felt by an imprisoned thief for an inmate he first met as a child at reform school. Dottie Gets Spanked (1993): A brilliant assured short film from Haynes Dottie Gets Spanked offers an innovative glimpse of a future-talent unfolding. The story follows six-year old Stephen and his fixation with campy television comedienne Dottie. During his visit on set Stephen finds the scenes being filmed to reflect his deepest secrets and dreams.
