Bored with the runway and the glamorous LA life Domino shows up for a bounty-hunter seminar. Catching the teachers of the seminar as they try to cut and run with the proceeds she manages to win their respect and joins their team. This consists of Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke) the tough-as-nails leader and Domino's surrogate father and Choco (Edgar Ramirez) an impulsive Venezuelan who harbors a not-so-secret love for Domino. The three form a kind of family working under Claremont Williams (Delroy Lindo) who plays Charlie to their three angels. For a time they are unstoppable even agreeing to let the slimy Mark Heiss (Christopher Walken) produce a reality-TV show about them which is hilariously hosted by Beverly Hills 90210 stars Ian Ziering and Brian Austin Green. But when Claremont orchestrates a complicated inside job in order to raise the money for his granddaughter's doctor bills the precarious balance within the trio is disturbed. Tom Waits stands out in a cameo as a wise wanderer who advises the lost bounty hunters.

  In giving 1991's The Last Boy Scout a three-star review, critic Roger Ebert was properly performing his duty as an objective reporter, praising the filmmakers' professional skill while observing that "the only consistent theme of the film is its hatred of women". For the purposes of this capsule review, there's no such obligation to level-headed fairness; the simple truth is, this ultraviolent, action-packed vehicle for Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans is disgustingly rotten to the core. Not only is it fuelled by a bitter and spiteful attitude toward women, it's also the kind of profanely vulgar movie that doesn't hesitate to put foul-mouthed children in the path of vicious thugs and potentially deadly situations. Willis plays an ex-secret service agent turned private detective who is hired to protect a stripper (Halle Berry) and then teams up with the stripper's boyfriend (Wayans), a disgraced NFL star who was kicked out of football for gambling. They catch on to a criminal plot leading all the way up to a corrupt football team owner who wants to legalise gambling on pro football. Willis and Wayans get in and out of all sorts of trouble along the way, and naturally there are plenty of explosions to go along with the brutal beatings, gunfire and constant cussing. Shane Black (of Lethal Weapon infamy) set a Hollywood record (since broken, several times) for the sale price of his slick but vile screenplay and Top Gun director Tony Scott handles the action with his trademark gloss and high-impact style. But, seriously, is this a movie that anyone could bear to watch twice? --Jeff Shannon

Long a star in Canada, and a major draw throughout the Francophone world, the Québecois vocalist was still a relatively new, if increasingly successful, commodity stateside. A clutch of single hits, augmented by two big soundtrack themes, hadn't entirely erased the suspicion that Dion's career was being bolted together on an assembly line not far from Mariah Carey's--apart from frequent overlaps in production support, both singers relied on similar mixtures of sweeping ballads and crisp, uptempo dance workouts, and both were notorious for their vocal gymnastics.The Colour of My Love works hard, as does Dion, to convince us she's already a major diva, and the approving crowd of hometown fans obviously agrees. Dion, her hair cropped in a shorter, curly "do", is equally chic in black suit or blue gown, a troupe of dancers invades for strategic uptempo pieces, and her studio duet partners for both "When I Fall in Love"(Clive Griffin) and "Beauty and the Beast" (Peabo Bryson) pop up to repeat their roles. The star attacks each song with laser-like focus, and she radiates a sense of theatrical drama.Technically, however, the special suffers from the kind of direction that mistakes swooping camera movement, sudden zoom shots, tilted frames and other concert video clichés for real drama. More problematic is abundant evidence of considerable post-production sweetening in the star's vocals--like other post-rock divas with arena-sized ambitions, Dion (or perhaps her producer) is apparently determined to reproduce the surreal sonic precision and scale of the records. It's a slippery slope that tempts perfectionists to leave less and less of the actual performance on the soundtrack, even though Dion's huge voice would still be impressive (and possibly more exciting) if rendered without such editorial tweaks. --Sam Sutherland, Amazon.com
